Associate Technician Deutsche Windtechnik (DWT) is Germany's largest independent service provider, offering a comprehensive service package for wind turbine generators (WTG) from one single source. This is a skilled position; employees in this role perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of wind turbine mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems, understand schematics and use appropriate diagnostic tools. The successful candidate will interpret fault reports, maintain power generation reports, service logs in the computer database, and monitor turbine performance. The technician should be able to understand and utilize Deutsche Windtechnik documentation to include basic drawings and schematics, work procedures, equipment, tooling, and machinery associated with routine wind turbine operation and maintenance. It is expected that the technician will learn basic electrical and mechanical maintenance skills such that they will be able to perform maintenance related tasks independently, as well as provide adequate assistance to more experienced technicians in the performance of routine activities. Mental demands include reading and interpreting documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals; writing routine reports and correspondence; understanding and following customary instructions in order to perform the essential functions of the position in a satisfactory manner; reading and interpreting blueprints and schematics; dealing with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations; and working with minimal supervision, given proper instructions. Physical demand classification includes standing, using hands to finger, handle, or feel; reaching with hands and arms; climbing or balancing; stooping, kneeling, crouching, or crawling; and talking or hearing. The employee must be capable of lifting and/or moving up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus. The employee must be physically fit enough to free climb 250 ft multiple times a day while wearing 25+ lbs. of climbing gear under extraordinary weather conditions. Must be capable of rescuing team mate anywhere in tower in the event of emergency. Must be able to work in extreme weather conditions. Description of tasks includes the provision of preventative and corrective maintenance on GE 1.5 wind turbines as per DWT instructions; completion of all relevant paperwork, including work order cards, checklists, etc.; ensuring all health and safety procedures are followed; performing scheduled maintenance as required; assisting large corrective teams with replacement of major turbine components e.g. generators and gearboxes; assisting in all areas of site operations; providing safe access and egress to all people in the work party; establishing and maintaining general safety from the system/Lock Out Tag Out (LOTO); complying with Deutsche Windtechnik policies and procedures and customer site rules; reporting all incidents and occurrences as per Deutsche Windtechnik Company Health and Safety policy; performing routine preventive maintenance on wind turbine mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems (under direction and supervision, if needed); performing wind turbine mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic systems troubleshooting and repairs; recognizing occurrences of wind turbine error codes and appropriately reporting the problem; assisting with removal and installation of wind turbine mechanical, electrical, and hydraulic components; assisting with heavy equipment (crane) rigging and directing; performing wind turbine controller maintenance and repair; completing required reports and other paperwork, some of which require computer entry; assisting with high-voltage system maintenance and repair; maintaining adherence to company policies, safety standards, and good housekeeping practices; maintaining proper care of company tools and vehicles; and demonstrating the ability to learn advanced troubleshooting and repair of the wind turbines. Required education and experience and skills include a high school graduate/GED, an associate degree preferred (not required), persons with wind energy certifications, military experience, electrical and mechanical experience are highly encouraged to apply, experience 0 + 2 years in wind energy, electrical, mechanical, and technical equipment, a valid driving license (NON CDL/CDL), the ability to pass a physical exam and drug/alcohol screening, and the ability to climb and work atop freestanding wind turbine towers that exceed 250 ft in height. Equipment, machines, tools used include electrical testing equipment, torque wrench, crane rigging, SCADA systems, computer, computer software, scanner, printer, telephone, copier, and fax machine. Description of work environment includes being regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; high, precarious places; particulate matter and outside weather conditions; risks of electrical hazards; occasionally exposed to hazardous chemicals; and usually loud noise level.
