Laboratory Technician

Job Description Medical technicians participate in the process of analyzing samples of blood, tissue, and body fluids to determine chemical content, cell count, drug levels, or blood type; they may also assist in the process of searching for specific microorganisms such as bacteria or parasites. They prepare the samples for examination, use automated equipment and specialized instrumentation, and assist with performing numerous complex tests simultaneously. Medical technicians may work in a medical facility or in an independently run laboratory and often handle infectious specimens, following infection control and sterilization protocols to minimize hazards. They can also expect to spend many hours standing in a laboratory. Job Duties The day-to-day duties of a medical technician include complex analysis of microscopic, immunologic, biologic, bacteriologic, hematologic, and chemical tests and their results. Some tasks that a laboratory technician might be asked to perform include Qualifications Educational Requirements Required: Associates degree in medical laboratory technology, clinical laboratory science, or chemical, physical, or biological science. Most Desired: Associates degree in medical laboratory technology. Additional Information Licensure/Certification/Registry/Listing: Must be eligible for Medical Laboratory Technician certification upon hire.
