The role involves supervising and directing the activities of various levels of assigned nursing staff. Care coordination with other disciplines is essential while utilizing critical thinking and independent judgment. The nurse collects relevant data pertinent to the patient's health or situation. Assessment data is analyzed to determine diagnoses and care issues. A plan is developed that prescribes interventions to achieve desired outcomes. The plan is implemented, care delivery coordinated, and strategies employed to promote health and safety. Progress toward attaining outcomes is evaluated. Outcomes for patients or their situations are identified. Collaboration with the patient, family, and healthcare providers in a safe and caring environment is mandatory. Opportunities for learning are provided for patients, families, and team members. Direct health information is communicated to patients and families. Participation in discharge planning ensures continuity of care. Responsibilities include delegating appropriately and coordinating duties of healthcare team members.
