The VA Midwest Health Care Network advocates for a Whole Health System of care in each of the Medical Centers. This is an approach to healthcare that empowers and equips people to take charge of their health and well-being and live their lives to the fullest. As an employee operating in a Whole Health System of care, you will operate in a model with three core elements, seeking to create a personalized health plan for each Veteran. This is done in the context of healing relationships and healing environments and a connection back to the Veteran's community. This aligns with the Veterans Health Administration (VHA) Mission Statement to Honor America's Veterans by providing exceptional health care that improves their health and well-being. The PA (Physician Assistant) is responsible for delivering primary care to a panel of patients, with key duties focused on providing and documenting health care services for Veterans in accordance with VHA and VA Central Iowa Primary Care standards.

Duties include:

• Provides comprehensive care for Veterans for a panel size of approximately 900 patients or same-day access
• Perform initial histories and physical examination on outpatients
• Provide ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients
• Screen outpatients to determine the need for further care
• Prescribe medications within the defined scope of practice
• Order diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms
• Review need for and order health promotion and disease prevention measures
• Initiate, respond to and expedite request for consultations, special tests, and studies
• Provide education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions, and use of prescribed treatments and drugs
• Serve as a preceptor for PA residents and students as requested
• The practice emphasizes evidence-based medicine, primary and secondary preventative medicine, a computerized medical record system, and continuous quality improvement based on individualized provider data.
• The PA may sometimes need to work alone but can request assistance from other medical staff (including other primary care staff and staff in the Emergency Room or inpatient service at the nearest VA medical center when needed).

Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:00am - 4:30pm.
