WORK PRINCIPLES Every employee is expected to abide by all the specified work principles at all times. The employee must: Exhibit a strong commitment to excellence in every aspect of providing excellent care to the residents of Assisted Living at Goodwill by word and deed and by Education and Training programs, Quality Assurance programs, and other improvement activities as may be conducted by Goodwill Retirement Community; Exert every effort at all times to assist and support each resident, maintaining the dignity and independence of the resident to the highest degree possible and maintaining the confidentiality of the resident and his or her records in every respect; Treat every resident, family member, member of the public and member of the staff with respect and dignity; Obtain and maintain any and all required certification and/or licensure from the appropriate agency; If a regularly scheduled employee, make himself or herself available to work as scheduled on an on‑going basis; Report to work on the day and at the time indicated on the posted work schedule in accordance with the policies and procedures on employee attendance, tardiness, and absenteeism; Report to work dressed appropriately for the work assignment in accordance with the policy and procedures on employee attire; Remain at the work station throughout the tour of duty except when excused or sent by the supervisor to another location; Take breaks and meal times in accordance with the policies and procedures on breaks and mealtimes; Willingly cooperate with supervisor and with coworkers in the performance of his or her duties, complying with all appropriate standards and practices of the discipline and complying with all Goodwill Retirement Community rules, procedures, and policies at all times; Encourage professionalism, mutual respect, and teamwork among fellow workers in order to achieve excellence of service and work to maintain a positive atmosphere and attitude at all times in Goodwill Retirement Community among staff, residents, and visitors, refraining from any activity that encourages the development of a negative atmosphere and attitude; Recognize problems that interfere with excellent care, handling them in an open, honest fashion and through appropriate channels. PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS The Assisted Living Medication Technician (AL Med Tech) is required to perform each of the following responsibilities to a performance level set by the immediate supervisor with input from the employee. Both the employee and the supervisor monitor the employee's performance level for the purpose of improving performance and evaluating the contributions of the employee to the care of residents and to the overall operation of Assisted Living at Goodwill. Essential Functions Work independently and constantly. Receive a report from the Med Tech at the beginning of each shift and give a report to the Med Tech at the end of each shift on the status of all residents. Immediately report to the Assisted Living Manager on each incident and each potentially major change in the condition of each resident. Maintain confidentiality of information about the resident using appropriate regulations, rules, and guidelines in order to protect the resident's right to privacy. Accurately document all tasks performed on each shift. Maintain a safe environment for residents and staff with respect to resident rooms and hallways using safety guidelines, resident needs, and common sense to save residents and staff from accidental injury. Maintain a safe environment for residents and staff with respect to infection control using infection control guidelines including but not limited to: the prescribed hand washing technique, isolation techniques, personal and environmental cleanliness, disposal of infectious waste to avoid cross‑contamination, and the spread of infection among residents and staff. Use all available resources encouraging each resident to develop and retain as much independence as possible, to do as much for himself or herself as possible, to socialize with others inside and outside the Assisted Living area, and to participate in activities and programs provided by Goodwill Retirement Community. Ensure the resident's privacy by appropriately using room doors and bathroom doors along with the resident's personal wishes regarding privacy to maintain the dignity of each resident. Work with residents individually and in groups using conversation, activities, and outside resources as the needs and interests of the residents require. Use personal and telephone contact to maintain effective communications with each resident's family and to work with each family as appropriate to meet the needs of each resident. Assist each resident with the activities of daily living to the extent required by assisting the resident as necessary to and from the dining room, activities, or programs using appropriate devices. Assist each resident, if requested, with rising and dressing in the morning. Assist each resident, if requested, with bedtime activities. Remind each resident, as appropriate, of medication schedules, activities, appointments, etc. using the resident's own records and information from other appropriate sources. Communicate with the Dietary Services Department regarding the dietary needs of each resident and regarding nutritious snacks provided to each resident. Serve the breakfast, noon, and evening meals to each resident in the resident's room or in the dining room (according to the resident's preference) using trays sent up from the Dietary Services Department. Encourage each resident daily to make his or her bed as necessary, assisting only when it is obviously necessary to do so. Assist each resident with bathing, if requested, during the day or during the evening as preferred by the resident using the resident’s linens and bathroom or a Goodwill tub room as required. Make each bed with fresh linens and remove soiled linens, towels, washcloths, and personal laundry to the laundry on each bath day or as necessary. Assist with or perform treatments as directed by the nurse using appropriate supplies and the instruction and supervision of the nurse to provide appropriate care for the resident. Collect specimens from residents as directed by the nurse using appropriate collection devices to ensure accurate results and appropriate care for residents. Initiate emergency procedures for cardiac/respiratory arrest using CPR when appropriate. Gather trash from all rooms, placing new liners in the wastebaskets and take it to the dumpsters using plastic bags. Clean and vacuum Assisted Living Unit floors. Assist each resident to maintain an appropriate temperature in his or her apartment using available temperature controls. Inspect the Assisted Living Unit for maintenance needs using visual techniques and input from residents, submit maintenance request forms for needed work, and follow up to make sure that repairs are appropriately completed in a timely fashion. Inspect the Assisted Living Unit on a regular basis for safety hazards using visual techniques and input from residents and take appropriate action to correct hazards found. Clean all bathrooms and tub rooms using the housekeeping cart and its equipment (bucket, mop, wringer, water, detergent, toilet bowl brush and cleaner). Clean all resident room equipment, shelves, surfaces, lights, window blinds, and exposed pipes using the housekeeping cart and its equipment (bucket, rags, water, detergent, and the appropriate sanitizing agent). Carefully dust all sprinkler heads using a vacuum cleaner with a dusting brush attachment. Wash and sanitize wastebaskets using hot water, detergent, and sanitizing solution, relining them to keep the environment clean, odor‑free, and sanitary. Restock supply closets on floors using the appropriate cart, paper products, and cleaning supplies to achieve efficiency in performing housekeeping duties. Marginal Functions Perform such other duties as may be assigned by the Assisted Living Manager for the efficient and effective operation of the Assisted Living program. Qualifications This role requires physical ability to lift and/or carry light objects, manipulate items up to 75 pounds, lift and position residents up to 150 pounds, occasionally lift residents up to 350 pounds with assistance, push residents weighing up to 350 pounds, stand, stoop, squat, bend, reach to floor level and up to 6 feet above floor level, walk up to 16 consecutive hours, and perform other tasks related to laundering, cleaning, and maintenance. Employees must also be able to manipulate with dexterity, operate audio‑visual equipment, and manage tasks requiring concentration and precision. Physical Requirements Lift and/or carry light objects such as resident charts, laundry, thermometers, linen, resident care items, weighing up to 50 pounds without assistance; Frequently manipulate with assist up to 75 pounds while lifting, positioning, evacuating and transferring residents to and from beds, bedside commodes, toilets, wheelchairs, and so on; Frequently lift and position residents weighing up to 150 pounds with the occasional assistance of another employee; Occasionally lift and position residents weighing up to 350 pounds with the assistance of a mechanical lift and/or other employees; Frequently push residents weighing up to 350 pounds in wheelchairs on tiled and carpeted floors throughout the building; Stand, stoop, squat, bend, reach to floor level, reach to up to 6 feet above floor level, and walk up to 16 consecutive hours per day with infrequent rest periods; Continually move the arms and body, pushing and pulling while vacuuming, dry mopping, wet mopping, loading, unloading, and folding laundry; Occasionally climb and work from a step stool or a stepladder; Stretch and reach into hard‑to‑reach areas or objects; Manipulate with dexterity, as in cutting, sewing, embroidering, and lettering with activities; Operate equipment, including audio‑visual equipment. Environmental Conditions: Exposure Determination Exposure may occur when performing treatments or procedures in which potentially infectious body fluids or secretions are present (e.g., providing personal hygiene, changing dressings, performing hemodialysis or urinalysis, giving injections, giving medications orally, and performing venipuncture). Exposure may also occur when providing care to residents while potentially infectious body fluids or secretions are present (e.g., changing bed linens, providing personal hygiene, feeding residents, cleaning the resident after emesis or diarrhea, changing incontinence pads, and taking temperatures orally or rectally). Exposure may occur when coming in contact with potentially infectious body fluids or secretions while feeding residents or while cleaning resident after feeding them. Other Environmental Conditions The chemical compounds of medications and treatments; Hazardous chemicals such as disinfectants, cleansers, and soap; Potential bruises, scratches, and hits due to the unpredictable behavior of some residents; Occasional loud and unpleasant noises due to the unpredictable behavior of some residents; Unpleasant odors and sights; Tasks related to resident care that some individuals might find unpleasant; Potential unkind remarks at times from residents, family members, or visitors; Potential stress symptoms resulting from the responsibilities of daily care of the elderly, sick residents, and from the total responsibility for resident care; Potential injury from falls on slippery or wet floors; Noise from washers, dryers, and vacuum cleaners; Potential allergic reactions to chemicals, lint, scents, animals and flowers; Potential burns from hot irons and clothes washers and dryers; Potential for injury from equipment and supplies used, such as knives, scissors, hot water, and hot wax. #J-18808-Ljbffr Goodwill Mennonite Home
