Postdoctoral Fellow - Doerfler Lab

Overview We are seeking a postdoctoral fellow to join a research program focused on the molecular regulation of fetal hemoglobin (HbF) in sickle cell disease (SCD). The lab integrates functional genomics, single-cell multi-omics, and genome engineering to study how regulatory elements at the β-globin locus control γ-globin expression and its variability across erythroid cells. This work combines mechanistic biology with translational relevance, leveraging primary human samples and collaborative clinical cohorts. Position Summary The postdoctoral fellow will lead projects aimed at defining how chromatin organization and cis-regulatory architecture influence HbF expression. This includes applying and integrating bulk and single-cell sequencing approaches (e.g., RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, multiome) with CRISPR-based perturbation in erythroid systems. The role is designed for a scientist who wants to develop independence in both experimental design and data interpretation. The fellow will work closely with the PI while taking intellectual ownership of their project, contributing to study design, analysis, and overall scientific direction. Key Responsibilities Design and execute hypothesis-driven experiments using functional genomics and genome editing approaches Generate and analyze bulk and single-cell sequencing datasets (RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, multi-omics) Contribute to or develop computational workflows for processing and interpreting genomic data Perform studies in erythroid model systems and primary human cells Interpret results, refine hypotheses, and plan next steps in collaboration with the PI Prepare manuscripts and present findings at scientific meetings Contribute to mentoring junior trainees and maintaining a collaborative lab environment An ideal candidate will bring a blend of advanced scientific training and hands-on research experience, with a PhD in genetics, genomics, molecular biology, computational biology, or a related field, paired with a strong foundation infunctional genomics and the analysis of sequencing data. They will have demonstrated growing independence in designing and executing research projects and will have contributed to the scientific community through peer-reviewed publications. Experience with CRISPR/Cas9 genome editing and familiarity with sequencing-based assays such as RNA-seq, ATAC-seq, or single-cell genomics are highly preferred. Skills in R or Python for data analysis, comfort with integrative multi-omic approaches, and a background in hematopoietic biology or primary cell systems are also valuable. Beyond technical expertise, the ideal candidate will be driven by a deep curiosity for mechanistic, question-focused biology and will approach data with a critical, adaptive mindset.
