Assistant Library Director

PRIMARY FUNCTION

Assists the Library Director in the leadership, management, supervision, and administration of the library to provide high-quality library services in accordance with Library Board policies and applicable laws, regulations, and procedures. Works under the general direction of the Library Director and exercises independent judgment within established policies and delegated authority.

● Strong verbal and written communication, organizational, and time-management skills, with the ability to perform multiple responsibilities simultaneously

● Demonstrated ability to provide high-quality reference and readers' advisory services using print, digital, referral, and interlibrary loan resources

● Knowledge of library principles and practices, including intellectual freedom, equitable access, freedom of expression, patron confidentiality, collection development, weeding, and other library ethics

● Proficiency with computers, library technologies, integrated library systems, Microsoft Office, internet resources, and digital communication tools

SPECIFIC DUTIES

● Demonstrates a commitment to providing exceptional customer service by anticipating patron needs, offering thoughtful assistance, and creating a welcoming, responsive, and inclusive environment that ensures positive patron experiences through effective communication and problem-solving

● Provides day-to-day supervision of library staff under the direction of the Library Director by assigning work, monitoring performance, providing training and guidance, and ensuring high-quality public service

● Assumes responsibility for library operations, staff supervision, and public service during the Director's absence

● Maintains a safe environment for staff and the public, and responds appropriately to emergencies

● Develops, plans, coordinates, promotes, implements, and evaluates year-round library programs and events for all ages, including the Summer Reading Program and educational, cultural, literary, and arts-based activities that support literacy, creativity, community engagement, and organizational goals

● Coordinates program logistics, including scheduling, presenters, materials, promotion, setup, and evaluation of program effectiveness, and collaborates with staff, schools, presenters, community organizations, and other partners to expand programming and outreach opportunities

● Assists in maintaining the library's website and social media platforms by creating and updating content, promoting library services, programs, and events, and ensuring information is accurate, timely, and engaging

● Oversees cataloging, classification, processing, and resource sharing services, including Evergreen (ILS), interlibrary loan, and patron access to library collections

● Develops and maintains the library collection by selecting, purchasing, evaluating, weeding, and managing donated materials

● Assists the Director with policy development, budgeting, grant writing, strategic planning, hiring, staff development, and volunteer coordination

● May assist the Library Director in preparing reports, presentations, and other materials for the Library Board, and may attend Board meetings to provide information or support as requested by the Library Director

● Provides direct public service, including reference, readers’ advisory, outreach, homebound delivery, and support for book clubs and other specialized services.

● Promotes library collections, services, programs, exhibits, and facilities to encourage community engagement

● Researches and selects book summaries and reviews for weekly newspaper article

● Maintains professional knowledge through continuing education, workshops, conferences, and participation in professional organizations

● Plans, organizes, and implements special projects as needed

● Performs other related responsibilities as necessary

WORK ENVIRONMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Work is performed in a public library setting and will include some evening or weekend hours, frequent interaction with staff and the public, regular interruptions, changing priorities, and the ability to perform detailed work accurately in a fast-paced, dynamic environment. This position requires the ability to perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodation.

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is frequently required to sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, and use hands and arms to operate computers, office equipment, and library materials. The employee may occasionally be required to reach, climb, balance, stoop, kneel, crouch, or bend.

The employee must occasionally lift, carry, push, or move materials and equipment weighing up to 50 pounds.

● Bachelor's degree and at least five years of progressively responsible library experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities

Preferred Qualifications

● Master's degree in Library Science (MLS/MLIS) from an American Library Association (ALA)-accredited college or university

● Supervisory or leadership experience in a public library

● Experience with integrated library systems (such as Evergreen), cataloging, collection development, interlibrary loan, and public library operations
