Manager, Data Engineering

$140k - $185k
Full-time

Jobgether

This position is listed on behalf of a partner company, which manages all applications and next steps. Our partner is looking for a Manager, Data Engineering based in the United States.

This is an exciting opportunity for an experienced data engineering leader to shape and scale an enterprise data platform within a fully remote, technology-driven organization. You will lead a team of at least five engineers, translating data architecture strategy into reliable, scalable, and maintainable data pipelines and products. Combining hands-on technical expertise with people leadership, you will drive engineering execution, establish best practices, and improve the quality and predictability of delivery. You will oversee modern lakehouse implementations, strengthen data governance, and ensure pipelines are secure, observable, and operationally reliable. Working closely with data architects, application teams, and business stakeholders, you will transform complex requirements into practical solutions that support informed decision-making. This role offers the opportunity to mentor engineers, develop future leaders, and foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement while enjoying the flexibility of a remote-first environment.

\n Accountabilities
  • Lead, manage, and develop a team of at least five data engineers by overseeing hiring, onboarding, performance reviews, coaching, professional development, and accountability.
  • Translate enterprise data architecture strategy into actionable roadmaps, prioritized backlogs, sprint plans, and measurable delivery outcomes that align with business objectives.
  • Oversee day-to-day engineering execution by breaking initiatives into manageable tasks, delegating responsibilities, removing blockers, conducting technical reviews, and ensuring high-quality deliverables.
  • Establish engineering standards that promote maintainability, consistency, documentation, repeatability, and predictable delivery across the data engineering function.
  • Drive implementation of the Medallion architecture (Bronze, Silver, and Gold) using technologies such as Azure Databricks, Spark, Delta Lake, SQL Server, dbt, Boomi, and Rivery, ensuring clear separation of responsibilities between data layers.
  • Partner closely with the Data Architect to translate architectural principles into practical implementation patterns, reference pipelines, and technical guardrails that support consistent execution.
  • Establish modern DataOps practices aligned with the software development lifecycle, including continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD), branching and release strategies, code review standards, and operational runbooks.
  • Improve pipeline observability and reliability by implementing monitoring for data freshness, pipeline failures, and data quality, while ensuring predictable incident response and operational support.
  • Collaborate with application and database teams to establish efficient, non-disruptive data access patterns for upstream SQL Server systems, including change data capture (CDC), read replicas, snapshot isolation, and batching strategies.
  • Design and oversee ingestion and transformation workflows for diverse source systems, including APIs, CDC-enabled databases, and file-based data feeds, selecting appropriate approaches based on source requirements.
  • Work with business stakeholders to clarify requirements, manage incoming requests, reduce unplanned work, and prioritize initiatives that align with platform strategy and delivery capacity.
  • Promote efficient decision-making through clear communication, lightweight documentation, appropriate stakeholder input, and ownership of agreed actions.
  • Build a strong engineering culture through regular one-on-one meetings, constructive feedback, mentoring, strategic delegation, and succession planning to develop future technical leaders.
  • Drive continuous improvement initiatives that strengthen team maturity, operational efficiency, engineering quality, and collaboration across the organization.
  • Support broader strategic business initiatives and cross-functional projects while modeling integrity, professionalism, and a commitment to organizational values.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant professional experience.
  • At least 10 years of professional experience in software engineering or data engineering, including building and maintaining production-grade data pipelines and data platforms.
  • At least 2 years of experience in a technical leadership capacity, including team coordination, task planning, code reviews, delivery ownership, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Direct people management experience, including hiring, interviewing, onboarding, conducting formal performance reviews, and supporting employee development.
  • Deep hands-on expertise with Databricks and Apache Spark, Boomi or Rivery, and Delta Lake patterns for scalable lakehouse data processing.
  • Strong experience designing and implementing ETL/ELT pipelines, including data ingestion, orchestration, transformation, and delivery across curated data layers.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing Medallion architecture, with clear separation between Bronze, Silver, and Gold layers and appropriate access controls, including preventing consumers from reading directly from Bronze.
  • Proven ability to translate architectural direction into reusable engineering patterns, implementation standards, technical guardrails, and reliable production workflows.
  • Experience working with upstream SQL Server systems and application or database teams to design efficient, non-disruptive data access strategies, including read replicas, CDC, snapshot isolation, and batching.
  • Strong understanding of varied data ingestion methods, including APIs, database change streams, and file drops, with the ability to select suitable strategies based on source contracts and operational requirements.
  • Practical knowledge of DataOps and modern software development practices, including CI/CD, source control, code reviews, release management, testing, monitoring, and operational documentation.
  • A demonstrated track record of improving engineering team maturity, moving from reactive delivery toward repeatable execution through standardized processes, documentation, and predictable throughput.
  • Strong people leadership, coaching, and mentoring skills, with the ability to develop technical talent, build accountability, and foster a collaborative and high-performing team.
  • Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills, including the ability to explain technical concepts, present recommendations, and collaborate effectively with engineers, architects, business partners, and senior leadership.
  • Strong organizational and prioritization skills, with the ability to balance short-term operational demands against long-term platform objectives and meet project deadlines.
  • Adaptability, sound judgment, and resilience when navigating changing business priorities, ambiguity, and competing demands.
  • High standards of integrity, professionalism, curiosity, and problem-solving, with a commitment to continuous learning and operational excellence.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications and collaboration tools such as Microsoft Teams is preferred.
  • Previous experience working with fully remote teams is an advantage, along with an understanding of business operations and processes.
  • Location eligibility: Candidates must have their primary residence in one of the following U.S. states: Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Idaho, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maine, Michigan, Missouri, North Carolina, North Dakota, Nebraska, New Hampshire, Nevada, New York, Ohio, Oklahoma, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Utah, Washington, or Wisconsin.
  • Ability to work effectively from a dedicated home office and participate in regular video and voice calls. Occasional business travel of up to approximately 10% may be required.
  • Eligibility to work in the United States is required and will be verified as part of the employment process.

Benefits

  • Competitive annual salary: $140,000–$185,000, based on relevant experience, skills, qualifications, position requirements, and applicable compensation considerations.
  • Fully remote work: A remote-first working environment designed to support flexibility, productivity, and work-life balance.
  • Monthly home-office stipend: $200 per month to help cover office expenses and supplies.
  • Comprehensive healthcare coverage: Two medical plan options, two dental plan options, vision coverage, a health savings account with employer contributions, and healthcare and dependent care flexible spending accounts.
  • Life and disability insurance: Employer-paid life insurance and short- and long-term disability coverage, with additional voluntary life and accidental death and dismemberment insurance options.
  • Retirement savings: A 401(k) plan with company matching.
  • Flexible time off: Unlimited paid time off, paid holidays, bereavement leave, parental leave, caregiver leave, and paid Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA) leave.
  • Additional time to recharge: Eligible team members can log off at 2:00 p.m. local time on Fridays when work and deliverables are up to date, along with a company-wide closure during the week of July 4.
  • Wellness reimbursement: Up to $750 annually toward eligible wellness expenses, such as gym memberships, fitness classes, or healthy meal plans.
  • Professional development: Tuition reimbursement and access to learning opportunities through the company's training products.
  • Employee assistance program: Resources to support personal well-being and work-life needs.
  • Additional coverage options: Access to pet insurance and other voluntary benefits.
  • Collaborative remote culture: An environment that values teamwork, integrity, recognition, personal growth, and employee well-being.
  • Meaningful leadership opportunity: The chance to shape data engineering standards, grow a talented team, and influence the evolution of an enterprise data platform.
