Patient Care Associate - Emergency Department

Job Summary City/State: Nyack, New York Department: Emergency Department_2 Bargaining Unit: NH- SEIU-1199 Work Shift: Evening Work Days: ALTERNATE WEEKENDS, ALTERNATE WORK SCHEDULE, DAYS VARY, ROTATING SCHEDULE Scheduled Hours: 2:30 PM-11 PM Scheduled Daily Hours: 8 HOURS Hours Per Pay Period: 40 Hourly Rate/Range: $23.34 (rate may vary based on shift differential, experience, education or other factors) Essential Functions Perform direct nursing tasks including taking vital signs, assisting with activities of daily living and personal hygiene needs. Collect data and chart observations, documenting vital signs, heights, weights, and other measurements; assist and document nutritional intake and fluid intake/output. Assist patients with nutritional needs, set up food trays, feed patients as needed, refill water and ice, and assist with mobility, turning, positioning, transferring to/from wheelchair, and ambulation. Perform phlebotomy via venous puncture, obtain certain lab specimens, perform EKG and report results, and perform finger stick blood glucose testing with documentation. Comply with hospital safety regulations, environment of care, risk management, and infection control policies; assist in maintaining a clean, safe environment. Perform delegated or other specialized functions as educationally prepared; may handle patient medications for transport and retrieval purposes only. Employee Performance Standards A. Provide timely feedback and communication. Anticipate and address patient and customer needs. Qualifications High School Diploma or GED required. Less than 1 year of previous health‑care experience required. Certified Nurse’s Assistant, Certified Patient Care Technician, or enrollment in a nursing program highly preferred. Preferred: Demonstrated experience and competence in phlebotomy and EKG. Preferred: Monitor Technician experience when applicable. Full command of English language. Sufficient physical ability and perceptive acuity to perform patient care functions. PCA Advancement Requirements PCA I: Complete PCA Orientation and Skills Competency Checklist within first 3 months; demonstrate EKG & phlebotomy skills and blood glucose monitoring. PCA II: 1 year experience as PCA and satisfactory performance appraisal. PCA III: In addition to all above, meet one of: national phlebotomy certification, preceptor training attendance, or dysrhythmia course completion; or (B) for TCU assignment: NYS CNA certification. PCA IV: In addition to all above, 2 years at Montefiore Nyack Hospital, performance appraisal >2.35, precepted at least 2 PCAs after training, BLS certification within 30 days.
