The cytotechnologist: uses standard laboratory terminology to generate interpretive statements that correlate cellular findings with pertinent clinical history, determines types and stages of illness and disease, correlates findings with patient clinical history, classifies results into various categories, and issues provisional diagnosis. Work is completed independently in a prompt, accurate, and reliable manner while adhering to federal/state regulations, accrediting agency standards, and established hospital and departmental policies and procedures. Day to day activities also include processing and preparing specimens, quality control, data entry, workload recording, filing slides and other clerical duties. May represent the hospital and/or the Laboratory to patients, physicians and other staff while assisting with biopsy procedures or providing specimen adequacy services in treatment areas. Works independently with supervision available as necessary from the section supervisor and pathologist. Performs related work associated with a routine non-gyn cytology lab and occasionally performs work outside this classification.Responsibilities:1. Performs and documents all tasks and procedures in compliance with all personal and section accreditation standards from JC and state/federal licensure while maintaining accuracy in all job functions. Identifies, investigates, determines and implements necessary corrective action, and communicates appropriately all unusual/unexpected results or situations. Consults appropriate personnel regarding all difficulties, technical questions or unresolved problems. Maintains certification in non-gyn cytology. 2. Performs all tasks, procedures, and documentation within laboratory standards for timeliness without reminder. Follows through on all tests, procedures, assignments, or tasks left from the previous shift, and reports any incomplete assignments to ensure work is completed without interruption of service. 3. Demonstrates financial responsibility by utilizing supplies appropriately to avoid wastage. Replaces all supplies used during the shift to assure volumes are sufficient for the following shift. Recognizes low inventory situations and alerts appropriate personnel in a timely manner. Inventories and/or orders section supplies to ensure adequate stock is available as assigned by/or in the absence of the supervisor. 4. Assists coworkers at all times with any difficult procedures/problems, including heavy workload. Provides instruction on new methods and instrumentation. Trains new employees and students. Documents all instruction completed on assigned employees' training outlines accurately and completely before the end of the shift. 5. Embraces culture of safety: Ensures all Infection Control / Safety protocols are followed at all times, disinfects work areas prior to end of each shift, Ensures adequate staff is on site prior to departure at the end of each shift. Notifies immediately any supervisor or management of any inappropriate conduct on the part of any lab employee. 6. Complies with CLIA and thus joint commission requirements to screen no more than 12.5 slides per hour, or 100 slides in one 8-hour shift/one day. Keeps records of work completed to support this requirement. 7.
