Description

The R&D Engineer III, 3D Printing Design will be responsible for planning, leading and executing projects focusing on new product design and development within the Product Research Engineering team. As an R&D Engineer, you will be a key team member to drive the design and development of novel orthodontic solutions. You will partner closely with cross-functional teams working with materials, software, and 3D printing systems to solve complex technical challenges in the areas of product performance and design.

Role expectations

• Leverage 3D technologies, software-platforms, and biomechanical principles to design novel orthodontic solutions.
• Lead product development and research projects from concept through launch.
• Develop test plans for efficacy, reliability, verification, and validation.
• Define procedures to evaluate real-world product performance and conduct bench top testing in accordance with FDA/ISO guidelines.
• Supplement functional performance testing with metrological analysis and/or material characterization.
• Perform statistical analysis and interpret data to guide technical decisions and product improvements.
• Connect product outcomes back to the inputs and outputs of advanced 3D manufacturing processes.
• Communicate technical findings, recommendations, and project updates to cross-functional stakeholders at all levels.
• Incorporate real-world data and customer feedback into future waves of product development.
• Collaborate across functions to drive creative solutions in a dynamic team environment.
• Provide general engineering support for Product Research & Development (PR&D).

What we're looking for

• B.S. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or other related degree with 5+ years of directly related experience in product development and research; or 
• M.S. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or other related degree with 3+ years of directly related experience in product development and research; or 
• Ph.D. in Mechanical or Biomedical Engineering or other related degree

• Strong theoretical and experimental background in structural mechanics and biomechanics.
• Experience with additive manufacturing and rapid prototyping processes for product design and development.
• Experience with 3D CAD modeling.
• Experience with test method development and documentation best practices in regulated industries.
• Experience with metrological tools and outputs, for example, computed tomography, microscopy, etc.
• Experience with mechanical or biomechanical equipment and/or material characterization techniques.
• Experience with scripting/programming.
• Experience in orthodontics or dental/medical device industry.

Pay Transparency

If provided, base salary or wage rate ranges are the range in which Align reasonably expects to set a candidate’s pay for the posted position. Actual placement depends on the individual skills and experience level of a candidate plus the total compensation and equity across team members. For other locations outside of the primary location, the base salary range will be adjusted geographically. 

 

For Field Sales roles, the salary listed is the base pay only and does not include the applicable incentive compensation plan. A cost of living adjustment may be added to base pay for higher cost areas in the U.S. 

 

Our internship hourly rates are a standard pay determined based on the position and your location, year in school, degree, and experience.

Both exempt and non-exempt employees who work 32 hours or more per week receive prorated vacation accrual based on their regularly scheduled work hours and tenure.
• Sick time is accrued throughout the year at the rate of one hour for every thirty worked. Employees can carry over unused sick leave each year, up to a maximum balance of 80 hours.
• 11 Company-designated paid holidays throughout the year.
• If employed for at least 12 consecutive months, Align will grant up to 6 weeks of paid Parental Leave. If employed for less than 12 consecutive months, Align will grant up to 4 weeks of paid Parental Leave.  All parental leave must be completed within one year of the birth or placement of the child.  Parental leave is in addition to any state and/or local parental leave benefits. Three days of paid bereavement leave. In some cases, due to travel the amount of paid leave may be extended to 5 paid days off. • Non-exempt employees will receive full pay for up to 10 days of jury duty.  Exempt employees will receive their full salary during any week they serve and perform any work. Other insurance such as legal, critical illness, voluntary accident, long-term care, auto, home and pet insurance are available for purchase.
