Residency Programs in Akron and Barberton

Our Organization

We are looking for a committed Family Medicine physician to join either our Akron Family Medicine Residency Program or the Barberton Family Medicine Residency Program. Details for both programs are provided below. We welcome applications from both recent graduates and seasoned professionals. The chosen candidate will become part of our multi-specialty medical group, which includes nearly 700 healthcare providers within our extensive health system, featuring two hospitals and over 20 health centers. Our organization stands as one of the largest integrated healthcare delivery systems in the state.

As a Core Faculty member in Family Medicine, you will be instrumental in educating and training our residents. Your clinical knowledge and enthusiasm for family medicine will significantly influence the next generation of healthcare professionals. While prior teaching experience is advantageous, it is not a prerequisite. We encourage candidates with a robust clinical background who are passionate about mentoring and teaching residents.

Akron Family Medicine Core Faculty The Family Medicine Residency Program

Overview of the Akron Family Medicine Residency Training Program Currently, this program accommodates 24 resident positions (8-8-8), is accredited by the ACGME with Osteopathic Recognition, and holds PCMH (NCQA) certification. We provide comprehensive Family Medicine services, including continuity of care in obstetrics and a dedicated inpatient Family Medicine hospital service. Our Family Medicine Center is devoted to community service through a multidisciplinary care model, which includes medication-assisted therapy, integrated behavioral health, on-site clinical pharmacists, embedded social services, and extended offerings such as a fresh food pantry and a medical-legal partnership.

Scheduling Options: The following options can be tailored to align with your professional aspirations.

Schedule Option A - "Business Hours Structure"
  • Monday to Friday during standard business hours

  • Hospital service call every seven days, rotating every six weeks

  • Inpatient responsibilities include managing general medical admissions and newborns, with an average patient load of 10-15

  • Night call is shared; if involved in FM OB, separate coverage is balanced with our current FM OB faculty (four members)

Schedule Option B - "Hospitalist Structure"
  • 26 weeks of 7 on / 7 off inpatient coverage (alternative arrangements can be discussed)

  • 40 days dedicated to administrative duties, teaching, and staffing services

Barberton Family Medicine Core Faculty

Overview of the Barberton Family Medicine Residency Training Program at our Barberton Campus has successfully trained nearly 200 family physicians. Established in 1981, Barberton Hospital became part of our organization in 2007. The program currently offers 18 resident positions (6-6-6) and is the sole residency based at Barberton Hospital. Residents have full access to all educational resources available within our health system. Core faculty members are responsible for supervising residents in both inpatient and outpatient settings, delivering formal lectures, and leading initiatives to promote high-quality care and resident scholarship.

Opportunity Highlights

  • No obstetrics coverage or prenatal care responsibilities

Candidate Requirements
  • Doctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) degree

  • Board Certified or Board Eligible in Family Medicine

  • Unrestricted Ohio medical license or willingness to obtain one

  • Strong verbal and written communication abilities

  • Dedication to providing quality care in a patient-centered, team-oriented environment
