Finance Department Intern

• Pay Status – Non-Exempt (Temporary/Intern)

Requirements:

Education: Current enrollment in an accredited two-year or four-year college or university with a major in accounting, finance, business administration, public administration, or closely related field; or recent graduate of such program.

Licensing, Registration or Certification: Background check must be satisfactory. Pre-employment screenings must be passed.

Experience: No prior professional experience required; prior coursework or exposure to accounting or finance principles preferred.

Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

• Knowledge of: basic accounting principles, financial concepts, and bookkeeping practices.
• Introductory knowledge of governmental accounting, budgeting, and financial reporting is preferred.
• Office procedures, practices, and standard administrative operations.
• Computer software applications including word processing and spreadsheets (e.g., Microsoft Office Suite).
• Ability to: communicate effectively both orally and in writing with staff and the public.
• Work with accuracy, attention to detail, and follow established procedures.
• Learn and apply accounting processes, policies, and financial systems.
• Maintain confidentiality of financial and personnel information.
• Organize and complete multiple tasks in a timely manner.
• Establish and maintain effective working relationships with City officials, employees, and the public.
• Provide courteous and professional customer service.
• Work independently on routine assignments and as part of a team.

Body Movements: Use hands to handle, feel or operate objects, tools, or controls. Reach with hands and arms. Occasionally lift and/or move up to 25lbs.

Language: Ability to read, speak and write English. Ability to effectively communicate and project positive attitude. Must be able to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.

Working Conditions: Most work is generally in an office environment. Noise level is usually minimal and environment is comfortable. May be required to occasionally deliver or retrieve items from off site locations. Few hazards exist with this position.

Tasks and Duties of Job:

General Definition: Performs complex professional level accounting duties, including general ledger reconciliation, preparation of financial reports, audit preparation and grant reporting. Performs complex financial analysis for various programs within the city; and performs a variety of professional accounting functions relative to assigned areas of responsibility.

1- Maintains the required confidentiality of all work.

2- Assists with basic accounting functions including data entry, filing, and record maintenance.

3- Assists in reviewing financial documents for completeness and accuracy.

4- Provides support in accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll, or utility billing functions as assigned.

5- Assists with preparation of reports, spreadsheets, and financial documentation.

6- Organizes and maintains financial records and files.

7- Provides general administrative support to Finance Department staff.

8- Interacts with City staff and the public in a professional and courteous manner.

9- Performs other duties as assigned by the Finance Director or designee.
