Associate Director of Development, Undergraduate Student Experience

The Associate Director of Development is a frontline fundraiser responsible for the qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of major gift prospects. The Associate Director of Development will identify, engage, and solicit donors at all life stages, including prospect research, development of effective solicitation strategies and stewardship of donors throughout the major giving process. The Associate Director of Development will typically maintain a donor portfolio with a focus on gifts of $50,000 or above. The Associate Director of Development may require frequent travel and meetings on and off campus during regular and non-traditional business hours and is expected to operate with high levels of autonomy.
Homewood Programs seeks an energetic and motivated frontline fundraiser to join our Development and Alumni Relations team. Reporting to the Sr. Associate Director of Development - Undergraduate Student Experience, the Associate Director of Development, will maintain a nationwide discovery portfolio, focusing on identifying and qualifying individual constituents with the capacity to make five and six-figure gifts. Specific Duties & Responsibilities:- Identify, cultivate, solicit, and steward a prospect pool for new and existing annual and major gifts.
- Design and implement development strategies to build a portfolio, involving relevant colleagues where necessary.
- Determine annual work plan goals in consultation with departmental/divisional development leadership.
- Track fundraising activity in the CRM.
- Plan and execute solicitation strategies leading to annual and major gifts.
- Prepare proposals, solicitation letters, gift agreements, and other development materials for prospects and donors that articulate Johns Hopkins University's needs, values, and ambitions.
- Develop and maintain comprehensive understanding of department or division mission, history, teaching, research, and/or clinical programs to effectively communicate funding opportunities. Learn and actively refresh knowledge of school/divisional/departmental collaborative partnerships, priorities, and shared goals.
- Proactively communicate with major prospects and donors about specific ways to give, both current and deferred, to maximize gift and tax benefits.
- Complete in-person and virtual donor visits each fiscal year. Goals for visits and other KPIs will be set by school/division/business unit leadership
- Develop and participate in implementing annual stewardship plans for donors.
- Develop and maintain strong, trust-based partnerships with colleagues across the institution.
- Work with faculty and institutional leaders to engage them as fundraising partners in identifying, cultivating, and soliciting prospective donors. Staff, train, and successfully guide internal stakeholders through the development process.
- Partner with team members on the planning and executions of development related activities for the department including professorship dedications, lectureships, and other stewardship events.
- Participate and engage in team-wide activities, meetings, events, and knowledge-sharing.
- Represent school/division on committees and at institution-wide programming where appropriate.
- Analyze data at a high level, identify prospects, demonstrate activity, and track progress toward work plan goals.
- Participate in special projects, programs, initiatives as assigned.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Manage a nationwide portfolio of undergraduate alumni and Hopkins families, moving individuals through the donor pipeline from initial outreach to cultivation and solicitation. This requires conducting a target of 125 virtual or in-person meetings annually.
- Actively contribute to the identification and qualification of new prospects for the Undergraduate Student Experience.
- Establish and oversee the Hopkins Family Council. Communicate regularly with the Senior Associate Director of Development, Undergraduate Student Experience and other major gift staff to cultivate new names for consideration for membership in this group.
- Serve as a primary development liaison to the Office of Student Affairs. Meet regularly with leadership to encourage participation and engagement in development activities and support philanthropic initiatives.
- Bachelor's degree.
- Three years of related experience, with one year of professional experience.
- Additional education may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education permitted by the JHU equivalency formula beyond a high school diploma/graduation equivalent
- Advanced degree (Master's or JD).
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook).
- Ability to work independently, take initiative, problem solve, and follow through with assignments from start to finish.
- Demonstrated ability to work successfully with a diverse population of students, staff, and external parties.
- Familiarity with University nomenclature, protocols and programs as well as any previous experience with JHAS (Hopkins Development Database) or other Salesforce CRM are highly desirable.
- Extensive travel is required, supplemented by virtual engagement. Candidates must be willing to commit to a minimum of one overnight or multi-night trip each month.
- Flexibility to work some nights and weekends is required to support events and travel.
