Nature and Scope:


Must be certified to teach in the state of Alaska. Must be endorsed in at least one subject area, with the ability to become endorsed in the other subject area by the end of the year.

This position reports to and is evaluated by the Principal. High School Teachers create a flexible High School age program based on subject matter taught, and a class environment favorable to learning and personal growth; establish effective rapport with students; motivate students to develop skills, attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good foundation for preparation for college, vocational school, or acquiring employment, in accordance with each student's ability; and establish good relationships with parents and with other staff members.

Essential Functions:

1. Demonstrate knowledge of content and pedagogy appropriate to student population.
2. Set instructional goals directly aligned to the Alaska State Standards.
3. Align instruction to the Alaska State Standards for Culturally Responsive Schools.
4. Demonstrate knowledge of appropriate academic, technological, and locally relevant resources.
5. Design coherent instruction.
6. Design appropriate formative and summative assessments.
7. Provide fair, equitable, and inclusive opportunities to all students
8. Create a classroom environment of respect and rapport.
9. Establish a culture for learning in the classroom.
10. Effectively manage classroom procedures.
11. Effectively manage student behavior.
12. Effectively communicate with all students.
13. Use appropriate questioning and discussion techniques during instruction.
14. Effectively engage all students in their learning.
15. Use assessment within as well as to inform instruction.
16. Demonstrate flexibility and responsiveness to enhance learning.
17. Make thoughtful and reflective assessments of lesson effectiveness and adjust lessons and instructional strategies accordingly.
18. Show professionalism in all manners of speech, dress, behavior, and social media communication.
19. Maintain accurate, complete, and appropriate records and files.
20. Build trust and promote positive relationships with students, parents, and colleagues.
21. Teach English Language Arts courses aligned to the Alaska State Standards for English Language Arts and Literacy.
22. Prepare and deliver integrated curriculum units in English Language Arts applicable to school-wide STEM initiatives.
23. Utilize relevant Informational Texts to support both ELA and Literacy in History/Social Studies standards
24. Keep abreast of current instructional developments in the English Language Arts.
25. Provide highly engaging lessons utilizing nationally accepted best practices, differentiated instruction strategies, and hands-on and experiential/project-based learning methods.
26. Utilize 21st century learning and teaching practices every day in every lesson.
27. Inspire and encourage student progress while supporting and strengthening the learning capabilities of each student.
28. Utilize Positive Behavior Support Intervention strategies to maintain a healthy learning environment for the students in the classroom while monitoring and managing students' behavior, including appropriate enforcement of student behavior rules.
29. Effectively prepare students to be successful for real life experiences.
30. Provide students with ample practice time to master standards and skills.
31. Provide students with focused formative feedback.
32. Have high expectations for all students.
33. Understand and align instruction to the Alaska State Standards and/or content area standards.
34. Prepare lessons that are culturally relevant to the student population.
35. Plan instruction that allows for independent/individual study as well as small group and large group collaborations.
36. Pursue innovation and excellence in assignment preparations and implementations

The following are preferred:

1. An effective working knowledge of the Alaska State Standards.
2. Familiarity with Alaska Native Cultures.
3. Familiarity with STEM-based instruction.
4. Familiarity with PBIS.
5. Familiarity with RTI and differentiated instruction.
6. Familiarity with project-based, experiential, and/or hands-on teaching and learning strategies
7. TESOL endorsed.

Additionally, the teacher should be able to:

1. Facilitate multicultural events in the school.
2. Describe a philosophy of education and demonstrate its relationship to their practice.
3. Understand how students learn and develop, and apply that knowledge in their practice.
4. Establish and maintain standards of pupil behavior to achieve an effective learning atmosphere.
5. Organize class time to provide a balanced program of instruction, demonstration, work time and assessment.
6. Guide the learning process toward the achievement of curriculum goals and__in harmony with the goals__establishes clear objectives for all lessons, units, projects and the like to communicate these objectives to students.
7. Teach students with respect for their individual and cultural characteristics.
8. Know their content area and how to teach it.
9. Develop lesson plans and instructional materials, and provide individualized and small group instruction to adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupil.
10. Translate lesson plan into developmentally and culturally appropriate learning experiences.
11. Use current technology to enhance instruction.
12. Use technology for record-keeping and research.
13. Apply knowledge of current research and theory to instructional program.
14. Facilitate, monitor, and assesses student learning.
15. Evaluate pupils' academic and social growth; keep appropriate records and prepare progress reports.
16. Identify pupil needs, make appropriate referrals, and work with Special Education staff to develop strategies for individual education plans.
17. Create and maintain a learning environment in which all students are actively engaged and contributing members.
18. Create a classroom environment that is conducive to learning and appropriate to the maturity and interests of the students.
19. Create an environment for learning through functional and attractive displays, interest centers, and exhibits of student's work.
20. Work as a partner with parents, families, and the community.
21. Take an active role in attending and/or participating in school and community events.
22. Communicate regularly with parents by means of newsletters, notes, phone calls, conferences, etc.
23. Participate in and contribute to the teaching profession by attending professional development sessions and/or registering for appropriate state-wide trainings and conferences.
24. Follow established school policies, rules, and regulations.
25. Other related duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS:

1. Finger strength required to type effectively on a computer keyboard
2. Finger, hand and arm strength necessary to write on paper, whiteboard, overhead projector sheets, etc. throughout the workday.
3. Visual acuity and stamina to work at a computer monitor
4. Lower body strength to kneel, stand and walk throughout the workday.
5. Verbal stamina to articulate clearly and with appropriate volume throughout the workday.
6. Auditory discrimination sufficient to receive detailed information through normal speech at 5 feet and warning cries or alarms above normal classroom and playground noise.

ENVIRONMENTAL DEMANDS:

1. Occasional exposure to weather extremes.
2. Occasional exposure to loud noises.
