Senior Interior Designer

Katie Gelsheimer Design is seeking an experienced residential Interior Designer to join our studio, focusing on construction and hard finishes for new builds and renovations. This position works closely with our Owner/Principal Designer to develop thoughtful, cohesive interiors -from space planning and cabinetry to finish selections and detailed design documentation. We’re looking for someone who can contribute strong ideas, work through technical details, and move projects forward independently within the studio’s established creative direction. About the Role You’ll be involved in Concept Design, Design Development, and Construction Administration. The Principal Designer will guide the overall design direction and retain final design approval, while you take responsibility for developing and coordinating assigned project work. Responsibilities Develop space plans, floor plans, cabinetry and millwork elevations, and 3D models. Research, source, and coordinate hard finishes, including flooring, tile, countertops, plumbing fixtures, lighting, and cabinet hardware. Prepare design presentations, finish palettes, specifications, schedules, and project documentation. Coordinate appliance specifications with cabinetry layouts and the overall design. Participate in client meetings, present assigned design work, and document decisions and next steps. Communicate with builders, architects, cabinet makers, vendors, and trades to clarify selections and design intent. Gather pricing and availability information and help keep selections aligned with project budgets. Review shop drawings and submittals for design intent alongside the Principal Designer. Keep drawings, specifications, and project records accurate and current. Manage assigned tasks across multiple projects and communicate priorities, deadlines, and outstanding decisions. Collaborate with the studio team and provide guidance to design assistants as needed. Qualifications Professional residential interior design experience, particularly with renovations and new construction. A portfolio demonstrating your involvement in space planning, cabinetry design, hard-finish selections, and design documentation. Proficiency in SketchUp and LayOut; familiarity with Bluebeam is a plus. Ability to read architectural plans and prepare clear, detailed drawings that communicate design intent. Working knowledge of cabinetry, material applications, finish transitions, and appliance coordination. Strong organization, attention to detail, and follow-through. Clear, professional communication with clients, vendors, and construction teams. Ability to work independently on assigned responsibilities while seeking input and approval at appropriate milestones. An appreciation for thoughtful, functional interiors and KGD’s clean, warm, and inviting aesthetic.
