Job Description: Quality Engineer

Reports To: Quality Director and President

The Quality Engineer is responsible for developing, implementing, and leading the plants Quality Management System (QMS). This position provides strategic and operational leadership for all quality assurance and quality control activities throughout the manufacturing process.

Reporting directly to the Quality Director and President, the Quality Manager will establish quality systems, policies, procedures, and performance standards while serving as the plants primary quality leader. This position is responsible for building the quality program from the ground up, developing sustainable processes, driving continuous improvement initiatives, ensuring compliance with customer and regulatory requirements, and fostering a culture of quality throughout the organization.

Initially, this role will operate without dedicated Quality Assurance or Quality Control staff and will function as both a strategic leader and a hands-on quality professional. As the quality program matures, the Quality Manager will develop recommendations for departmental growth, staffing, and long-term quality initiatives.

Leadership & Quality Strategy

· Develop, implement, and maintain the Quality Management System (QMS).

· Build the quality function, including future staffing recommendations and organizational structure.

· Establish company-wide quality objectives, standards, and expectations.

· Promote a culture of quality, accountability, and continuous improvement.

· Serve as the primary quality resource for leadership and operations.

Quality Systems

· Develop quality policies, procedures, work instructions, inspection plans, forms, and control plans.

· Establish incoming, in-process, final inspection, and shipping verification processes.

· Implement document control and nonconforming material procedures.

· Create quality alerts and standardized reporting systems.

Quality Assurance & Compliance

· Ensure products meet customer specifications, drawings, and internal standards.

· Lead internal audits and prepare for customer or third-party audits.

· Oversee calibration of measuring equipment.

· Lead future ISO initiatives if applicable.

Customer Quality

· Serve as primary contact for customer quality issues.

· Lead investigations, root cause analysis, and CAPA.

· Manage warranty and returned material investigations.

· Represent the company during customer quality audits, visits, and technical meetings.

Continuous Improvement

· Analyze quality trends and implement corrective actions.

· Develop KPIs including scrap, rework, customer complaints, first-pass yield, and cost of poor quality.

· Partner with Operations and Engineering to improve manufacturing processes.

Operational Support

· Perform inspections and audits as needed until additional quality personnel are hired.

· Review engineering drawings and customer specifications.

· Support production with troubleshooting and quality decisions.

Leadership & Training

· Develop and deliver quality training programs.

· Coach supervisors on quality expectations.

· Lead cross-functional quality meetings.

Reporting & Administration

· Prepare quality reports for executive leadership.

· Maintain quality records and documentation.

· Develop and maintain supplier quality processes, including supplier evaluations, vendor corrective actions, and collaboration with suppliers to resolve quality concerns.

· Perform other duties as assigned.

Authority

· Stop production when significant quality concerns exist.

· Place material on hold pending investigation.

· Reject nonconforming materials or finished goods.

· Require corrective actions from departments and suppliers.

· Escalate significant quality issues to the Quality Director and President.

Working Environment

· Manufacturing and office environment.

· Occasional weekends or extended hours as business needs require.

· PPE required in production areas.

• Occasional travel to customer or supplier locations may be required to support quality investigations, audits, corrective actions, and relationship management.

Desired Minimum Qualifications

· Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality, Manufacturing, or related field preferred (or equivalent experience).

· Five or more years of progressive quality experience in manufacturing.

· Experience building or implementing Quality Management Systems preferred.

· Knowledge of blueprint reading, GD&T, SPC, CAPA, root cause analysis, PPAP, and First Article Inspection.

· ISO 9001 knowledge preferred.

· ISO 9001 Lead Auditor certification or equivalent experience is a plus.

· Excellent leadership, communication, project management, and problem-solving skills.

· Proficiency with Microsoft Office and quality reporting tools.
