Job Description

The Environmental Monitoring Technician performs routine environmental monitoring of aseptic processing and controlled cleanroom environments that support pharmaceutical manufacturing. This role carries out assigned quality control and quality assurance activities in alignment with standard operating procedures (SOPs) and current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs). The technician ensures proper aseptic technique at all times, supports testing of controlled environments and utility systems, and accurately documents all work to maintain a compliant and safe manufacturing operation. This position offers strong exposure to multiple career paths, including quality control, microbiology, manufacturing, quality assurance, and validation, making it an excellent entry point into the organization.

Responsibilities

• Perform routine environmental monitoring of aseptic processing areas and controlled area cleanroom environments used for pharmaceutical manufacturing.
• Carry out assigned quality control and quality assurance activities in compliance with applicable SOPs and cGMP requirements.
• Ensure the consistent use of proper aseptic technique during all testing activities in controlled environments and utility systems.
• Follow established aseptic gowning protocols and procedures when entering and working in cleanroom and controlled environments.
• Operate and monitor laboratory equipment and techniques such as SAS and SMA samplers, Met One particle counters, viable airborne monitoring (active and passive), total airborne particulate sampling, viable surface monitoring, personnel monitoring, and membrane filtration for water samples.
• Perform testing on Water for Injection (WFI) and conduct gas sampling as required.
• Use a laminar flow hood to perform plate reading and testing procedures as part of microbiological and environmental monitoring activities.
• Document all work, observations, test results, and deviations accurately and completely in accordance with cGMP documentation standards.
• Spend approximately 70% of working time on the manufacturing floor collecting environmental samples in specific production suites.
• Perform approximately 30% of work in documentation and basic laboratory activities, including incubating samples for further microbiological testing.
• Collaborate and communicate effectively with manufacturing, quality assurance, quality control, and microbiology teams to support ongoing operations and investigations.
• Adhere to all safety, cleanliness, and contamination control procedures while working in cleanroom, laboratory, and controlled environments.
• Participate in rotational schedules and shift assignments to ensure continuous coverage of environmental monitoring activities.

Essential Skills

• Background in biology with the ability to understand microbiology, environmental monitoring, and aseptic processing concepts.
• Demonstrated knowledge or exposure to aseptic technique and aseptic gowning procedures.
• Exposure to cGMP requirements and practices within pharmaceutical manufacturing, laboratory, or other regulated environments.
• Experience or education related to microbiology and environmental monitoring in cleanroom or controlled environments.
• Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment while standing or being on feet for extended periods.
• Good computer skills, including use of personal computers and data entry programs for recording and managing data.
• Attention to detail and strong documentation skills to ensure accurate, compliant recordkeeping.
• Entry-level to approximately 2 years of relevant experience in biology, microbiology, laboratory, or regulated environments is ideal.

Additional Skills & Qualifications

• Bachelor of Science (BS) degree in Biology is preferred.
• Associate of Science (AS) degree in a relevant field will also be considered.
• Prior exposure to a microbiology laboratory or hands-on aseptic technique is strongly preferred.
• Experience working in pharmaceutical manufacturing, laboratory, or other regulated environments is strongly preferred.
• Experience working in fast-paced environments that require extended periods on ones feet is highly preferred.
• Interest in building a career in areas such as quality control, microbiology, manufacturing, quality assurance, or validation.

This is a Contract to Hire position based out of Maryland Heights, MO.

The pay range for this position is $22.00 - $22.00/hr.

Individual compensation offered for this position within this range will depend on many factors, including qualifications, skills, relevant experience, job knowledge, geographic location, internal equity, and other pertinent job-related factors.
