Facilities Mechanical Plumbing Technician

CLASSIFICATION TITLE: Facilities Mechanical Plumbing Technician Function Statement Under the supervision of a senior technician or supervisor, performs tasks that ensure the uninterrupted operations of threaded, flanged, groove locked, soldered, and pressed plumbing systems and equipment. Inspects, tests, installs, fabricates, modifies, rigs, maintains, troubleshoots, and repairs plumbing systems and equipment. Threaded, flanged, groove locked, soldered, and pressed Plumbing systems and equipment include, but are not limited to compressed gas systems, backflow preventers, sump pumps, drain, waste and vent systems, specialty water systems (e.g., chlorine dioxide, de-ionized water, reverse osmosis), domestic water systems and plumbing fixtures, heating hot water systems, and chilled water systems. Responds to emergency situations and evaluates and corrects defects. Assists other trades as needed; adheres to all safety practices and procedures; cleans and maintains work areas and equipment; attends meetings; properly completes documentation; provides a high level of customer service; communicates to customers, coworkers and supervision via written, electronic and verbal methods and devices; operates department vehicles; performs other duties as assigned. Shift, hours, days, and/or location are subject to change based on operational need in accordance with the collective bargaining agreement; may work overtime; subject to 24-hour emergency call. Job Duties Performs (70%) Plumbing Reviewing blueprints and technical drawings, Installing, repairing and replacing threaded, flanged, groove locked, soldered, and pressed piping and components. Measuring and cutting pipes using hand and power tools. Inspecting and identifying leaks. Installs and repairs domestic water systems. Installs and repairs drain, vent and waste systems. Installs and repairs specialty water systems (e.g., chlorine dioxide, deionized water, reverse osmosis). Installs, certifies, repairs and performs preventative maintenance on backflow preventers. Installs and replaces plumbing equipment and fixtures (e.g., meters, valves, toilets). Assembling and dissembling plumbing fixtures. Repairs compressed gas systems. Troubleshoots and resolves plumbing system issues (e.g., pressure, temperature, leaks). Performs plumbing and pipe fitting PMs. Addressing customer queries. Cleaning the work area after work completion. General Duties (30%): Technical Support Ensures areas are in compliance with applicable codes. Documents regulatory compliance tests. Becomes knowledgeable of equipment and utilities and transfers that knowledge to other staff. Troubleshoots and resolves field problems. May assist lower-level technicians. Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs. Updates building drawings. Participates on emergency response teams. Communication / Record Keeping Documents labor, materials and work performed on work orders. Requests equipment and materials required to complete tasks. Inform customers when tasks are completed. Communicates and initiates work order escalation, if needed. Updates building drawings. Other Department Duties Participates in professional development/ continuing education activities: obtaining and maintaining required certifications, soft skill development, etc. Participates in meetings, trainings, and orientations. Participates on emergency response teams. Interacts with and assists other areas and staff within the department. May participate on committees. Locates, identifies, disables and enables local utility shut-offs. Performs other duties as assigned. Major Work Characteristics Read, understand and update blueprints, schematics and as built drawings. Read, understand and apply safety standards and practices (e.g., hazard communication, infection prevention, lock-out/ tag-out). Read, interpret and apply technical manuals and systems specifications. Follow applicable trade specific codes, standards and regulations. Learn technical skills and apply new knowledge to solve problems. Select and use hand, power and machine tools. Establish and maintain interpersonal relationships. Maintain a clean and safe work environment. Add, subtract, multiply and divide whole numbers; calculate fractions, decimals and percentages; use algebra, geometry and trigonometry. Apply engineering principles, load calculations, accepted techniques and equipment required to lift and move extremely large or heavy objects. Locate, disable and enable electrical and plumbing shut-offs. Instruct others in performing tasks. Provide guidance and expert advice about technical systems or processes. Skills Brazing and soldering. Cut and thread pipe. Problem solving. time management, Conflict management (e.g. handling complaints, identify issues and negotiate with others). Basic computer (e.g., data entry, data retrieval, electronic communication, internet searches, navigate and retrieve information from websites). Customer service (e.g. demonstrate empathy, meet quality standards, actively look for ways to help others). Knowledge Of Ohio plumbing code (e.g. fittings, water supply systems, sanitary drainage systems, waste, stacks-vents, traps, piping and storage systems**). Planning and prioritizing work Resource management Minimum Classification Requirements High school diploma/GED or equivalent combination of education and experience; two years’ experience in the plumbing, trade and related equipment or equivalent combination of education and experience; obtain the following during probationary period: valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card; EPA Section 608 Technician Certification- Universal. Efficient skills and knowledge in using plumbing tools and equipment. A basic understanding of plumbing code compliance. Knowledge of plumbing fixtures (i.e. faucets, toilets, hot water tanks, etc.). as well as piping components (i.e. types of valves, fittings, types of piping). A valid driver’s license. Successful completion of probationary period. Desired Qualifications Associates/technical degree or certificate in skilled trades/maintenance related field; valid OSHA 10-hour General Industry Safety and Health card Physical Requirements Must be able to push and pull 70 lbs. and distinguish colors. Climb and stand on ladders for extended periods of time. Unusual Work Conditions May work in hot, cold, dusty, or dirty environments for an extended period of time. May work in cramped spaces.
