This position provides a unique and exciting opportunity to continue to shape the practice-based education at an innovative year-round pharmacy program within a vibrant health science campus. The Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) School of Pharmacy is preparing the next generation of pharmacists to meet the growing healthcare needs of society. MCW's PharmD graduates have the knowledge and expertise to practice at the "top of their education" and contribute to patient-centered care within a team-based model ensuring optimal medication therapy outcomes in concert with other healthcare professionals.
The School of Pharmacy is a destination program ensuring that graduates are practice-ready and team-ready upon graduation. Our exemplary experiential curriculum, embraced and lauded by preceptors and students alike, provides seven unique introductory pharmacy practice experiences (IPPEs) totaling 560 hours, including an interprofessional rotation, and seven advanced pharmacy practice experiences APPEs totaling 1,680 hours over the three-year curriculum. The rural APPE program continues to have interest among learners supported through our two regional campuses. As exhibited by our graduates, our alumni are well prepared for direct entrance to practice as well as pursuing postgraduate training, with two-thirds of a given class pursuing such training and surpassing the national match rate. The Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) Board of Directors reviewed the Doctor of Pharmacy program for purposes of continued accreditation status under the new 2025 Standards and awarded a full term of 8 years continued accreditation.
The Director of Experiential Education is responsible for the planning, implementation, and assessment of all experiential education activities at the School of Pharmacy. Working collaboratively with School leadership, the Office of Experiential Education Team, clinical faculty and preceptors, the Director leads the execution of the School's vision for an innovative experiential education curriculum that begins with introductory experiences in the first year and culminates with advanced experiences in the third year of the program. The Office of Experiential Education Team is responsible for site recruitment, and preceptor recruitment and training, development, and recognition. The Director cultivates and maintains strong relationships with MCW's primary clinical partners, Froedtert ThedaCare, Children's Wisconsin and Zablocki VA, as well as local health systems, community pharmacies and interprofessional practice sites.
Additionally, they must continue to forge partnerships with local health systems, community pharmacies (independent and corporate) and interprofessional education (IPE) models of practice. The Director must be keen on new areas of professional practice development, regulatory updates and accreditation changes forthcoming to the profession. With recent recognition of pharmacists as providers under state Medicaid, there are opportunities to advance the practice model of pharmacists in the state. The Director remains informed of emerging pharmacy practice models, regulatory developments, and accreditation standards to ensure the experiential program continues to evolve in response to the profession.
Position Highlights:
Lead the experiential education program by developing and maintaining professional relationships that support the vision and mission of the School of Pharmacy.
Provide direct supervision to the Office of Experiential Education professional staff
Provide strategic leadership for the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of the experiential education program.
Identify, develop, and maintain sufficient experiential sites for IPPE, IPE, and APPE rotations, including increasing out-of-state rotation placement opportunities.
Manage transparent and equitable process for student assignments to IPPE, IPE, and APPE sites while ensuring effective communication and accountability in interactions with learners.
As Course Director, enhance the delivery and outcomes of the Experiential Education Seminars during IPPE, IPE, and APPE.
Advance professional identity formation among learners through a systematic and ongoing process on-campus.
Maintain harmonious relationships with students, preceptors, colleagues, and experiential education constituents.
Promote a culture of professionalism and accountability among student pharmacists and withing the Office of Experiential Education.
Collaborate with the Assessment Committee to generate data, evaluate outcomes, and support continuous quality improvement outcomes.
Develop and maintain effective and transparent processes for student, preceptor, and site evaluations, including the creation and use of electronic systems for timely, accurate assessment and grade reporting.
Maintain an effective program for recognizing sites and preceptors for the educational support provided to its students.
Oversee site visits with preceptors and perform site evaluations.
Pursue professional development and scholarly activities.
Maintain active pharmacy practice site,, as approved location by the MCW School of Pharmacy, consistent with the faculty's assigned clinical effort and departmental expectations
Serve as Residency Program Director for Community Based Pharmacy (PGY1) Residency Programs and site coordinator for other affiliated residency programs, as assigned.
Participate in accreditation and regulatory processes as appropriate.
Provide service to the School of Pharmacy as assigned by the Dean.
Qualifications
Applicants must hold a Doctor of Pharmacy or B.S in Pharmacy degree from an accredited pharmacy program allowing for a commensurate faculty appointment in the Department of Clinical Sciences, and appointment at the Director level. Ideally applicants will have completed a residency or fellowship (or possess equivalent experience) and be eligible for Wisconsin pharmacist licensure to oversee pharmacy practice activities.
A minimum of 5 years of experience in direct patient care, serving as a preceptor for pharmacy students or other healthcare related experience is required.
Candidates will have a working knowledge of emerging healthcare delivery models that involve the pharmacy profession; possess the ability to collaborate with faculty and academic leadership in interprofessional education and practice initiatives; have experience in experiential education of pharmacy students, residents and fellows; demonstrate organizational, interpersonal and group communication skills; and be active in professional organizations.
