Job Overview XTRM/SPRL Labs is a facility of the College of Engineering that serves clients who are faculty, government agencies (such as NASA and DoD), and commercial companies in the development of unique integrated systems and instrumentation that are often used in challenging environments (e.g., space, arctic, above/on/below the water). The XTRM/SPRL Lab professional staff, with faculty and researchers, have built more than 35 space systems and instruments; instrumented numerous sounding rockets, balloons and aircraft; and developed ground‑based instruments. For seven decades SPRL has been one of a handful of university centers able to conceive, design, build, test, and operate space flight instruments in a truly "end‑to‑end" operation. Responsibilities Perform engineering design and testing work in the sub‑field of space instrumentation for space and planetary sciences with emphasis on design and control system. Assist with new instrument development and instrument testing using specialized equipment. Support electronic design for data system development and signal conditioning electronics. Perform circuit and schematic design from requirements and develop associated design documentation and test planning. Conduct instrument testing using specialized equipment. Support proposal development, especially for space systems. Design, develop, test, and evaluate programmable hardware devices, digital circuits, and/or embedded systems. Design data systems, selecting parts, materials, and processes to survive harsh environments. Program, modify, and configure system firmware that manages reprogrammable hardware and interfaces to provide services to applications. Apply software engineering principles to design, develop, test, and evaluate/modify software/firmware applications. Collaborate with other engineering teams and clients to discuss design concepts, potential problems, and proposed resolutions. Qualifications BS in electrical engineering, physics, mathematics, or relevant areas. Familiarity with digital systems (FPGA, ASICs, PCB, microcontrollers, etc.). Understanding the process for developing electronic designs and test procedures from requirements. Ability to develop new documentation and keep existing documentation up‑to‑date. Experience working as part of a team of faculty, research scientists, engineers, and technicians. Must be a U.S. citizen to comply with sponsor (NASA) regulations. Willingness to travel occasionally. MS or other advanced degree in engineering, physics, or mathematics. Experience in industry or student projects designing systems and equipment for space environments, especially with consideration to charging, radiation, or other effects on electronics. Experience designing, developing, testing, and/or evaluating microelectronic components (FPGA, ASICs, PCB, microcontrollers, etc.), technology, and equipment. Schematic and layout design experience. Experience coding in C, C#, VHDL, MATLAB, and JavaScript. Experience using Visual Studio, Altium Designer, Visio, MATLAB/Simulink, AMD Vivado Design Suite, Libero Design Suite, LTSpice, and Git. Familiarity with communication protocols such as SPI, I?C, UART, Ethernet, SpaceWire, and USB. Experience designing with memory, high‑speed serial interfaces, ADCs, DACs, or RF/digital mixed‑signal systems. The University of Michigan is an Equal Opportunity Employer.
