Bald Head Island Conservancy, Inc. Coastal Environmental Science Internship Description The Bald Head Island Conservancy on Bald Head Island, NC, is seeking recent college graduates with fieldwork experience to join our nonprofit team dedicated to the conservation, education, and preservation of barrier islands. Duties are primarily assisting with coastal environmental monitoring and field-based research, but will also include environmental education and other responsibilities essential to the function of a nonprofit organization. Interns will live and work on an island only accessible by ferry. Position Responsibilities Conduct field-based monitoring of barrier island ecosystems, including aquifer, creek, and beach water quality, invasive plant monitoring & treatment, wildlife population surveys Assist with wildlife emergency response and maintenance of educational animal exhibits Lead environmental education programs, such as field trips, kayaking, and nature tours Assist with nonprofit‑related duties such as information center, office tasks, hosting special events and visiting groups Potential to assist with the Sea Turtle Protection Program as needed Promote and practice stewardship of Conservancy’s facilities, properties, and equipment Conduct an individual project to enhance our research mission. Projects will include components of field botany, salt marsh ecology, and/or mapping in support of land conservation. Qualifications/Attributes Recent graduate from any accredited college or university majoring in natural sciences Experience in environmental science or wildlife management Growth mindset and curiosity, ability to be self‑directed, detail‑oriented, and communicate well with coworkers and supervisors Experience with and strong commitment to living and working in a remote location through quiet winter months with a small team Ability to work in physically challenging environment including extreme temperatures and field conditions while keeping an upbeat personality Confidence speaking to the public and answering questions about our programs Computer proficiency with competency with ArcGISPro, MS Office, and G Suite applications Must possess a valid Driver’s License, be able to lift 40 lbs, and pass a background check Details The internship will run from mid-August through mid-December 2026, with an anticipated start date of August 24, 2026. Work is generally between the hours of 8:30 – 5, but periodically, fieldwork will be at unusual hours including quarterly creek sampling when overnight work is required. Frequent weekend work is required. Average work week is 50 hrs. Interns will have 1-2 days off per week, depending on season. Interns live in provided on‑campus housing. Also provided are shared living quarters in the BHI Conservancy field house, utilities including wireless internet, parking for a vehicle at the Deep Point Marina, and a weekly ferry ticket for trips between the island and the mainland.
