Child Nutrition Services Worker I
The established eligibility list will remain in effect for one year. The District has the right to limit the number of eligible which can be reasonably used during the existence of the eligibility list. Current vacancy for immediate hire: An eligibility list is being established to fill current and future vacancies over the next 12 months. Applicants who successfully meet the employment standards outlined in the required qualifications in the job description and the supplemental questionnaire questions in the application will be invited to participate in the testing process. Written test date: Testing will be from 10:00 am to 3:00 pm, exclusively on Wednesdays (walk-in basis, no appointment necessary). Only qualified applicants will receive an email invitation to participate in the testing process.
Examples of Duties
Under the direction of the Director and/or Supervisor-Child Nutrition Services, assist in quantity preparation and serving of foods at an assigned school site; assist in the preparation and service of food and beverage items to staff and students; assist in maintaining food service facilities, equipment, and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition.
- Assist in the preparation and service of food and beverage items; prepare fruits, vegetables, rice, and desserts; assemble various ingredients as assigned; package and wrap food items according to established procedures and portion control standards; serve meals on serving lines; set out prepared foods.
- Heat, pan, arrange, and serve food items; replenish salad bar items; stock condiments, food items, beverages, and paper goods; assist in the storage and rotation of supplies in storage areas.
- Assist in maintaining food service facilities, equipment, and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition; clean and sanitize work areas and tables; operate dishwashers and wash trays, pots, pans, plates, utensils, and other serving equipment.
- Clean serving counters, tables, chairs, food containers and other food service equipment; prepare food and beverages for sale; count and set-up plates, trays, and utensils.
- Prepare salads, sandwiches, and packaged foods for distribution; mix, slice, grate, and chop food items; assure proper temperature of foods.
- Take inventory of food, beverages, condiments, and supplies; assure availability of items required for meeting projected menu requirements.
- Perform routine cashiering duties as assigned; receive and count money; make correct change; reconcile cash and credit receipts; maintain accuracy of meal counts; scan student meal cards and assist with deposits.
- Collect items to be processed such as free and reduced meal applications and meal tickets.
- Operate standard food service equipment such as slicers, steamers, ovens, and warmers.
Typical Qualifications
Education and experience: Any combination equivalent to: sufficient training and experience to demonstrate the knowledge and abilities listed above. Knowledge of:
- Basic food preparation including washing, cutting and assembling food items and ingredients.
- Basic kitchen utensils and equipment.
- Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
- Proper lifting techniques.
- Basic math and cashiering skills.
- Understand multi-step written and oral instructions.
- Safety and sanitation practices and procedures.
- Quantify food preparation and handling.
- Oral and written communication skills.
Ability to:
- Assist in maintaining food service facilities, equipment and utensils in a clean and sanitary condition.
- Learn methods and procedures for preparing and serving food in large quantities.
- Learn sanitation practices related to the handling and serving of food.
- Wash, cut, slice, grate, mix and assemble food items and ingredients.
- Communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
- Work cooperatively with others.
- Understand and follow oral and written directions.
- Operate a cash register and make change accurately.
- Work collaboratively as part of a team.
- Complete work with interruptions.

Application and Selection Process
All applicants who meet the minimum qualifications will be invited to participate in the examination process for the position. The examination process may include one or more of the following: written, oral, and performance examination. Candidates must pass all parts of the examination process to be placed on the eligibility list. The final score will determine the candidate's rank on the eligibility list. A candidate in the top three ranks (including tie scores) on the eligibility list may be considered for hire; when there are multiple vacancies in the same job classification, additional ranks will be considered. Open and Promotional examinations are open to applicants inside and outside the Lompoc Unified School District. To qualify for the promotional examination, employees must have permanent status in the Lompoc Unified School District as a classified employee. Promotional Only examinations are open to current Lompoc Unified School District classified employees only. For employees to qualify for the promotional examination, they must have permanent status in the District as a classified employee. Dual Certification examinations are open to all applicants, including current Lompoc Unified School District employees and those from the general public. Dual Certification results are integrated into one eligibility list based on rank. Eligibility lists are generally valid for up to one (1) year. Lists may be exhausted prior to the original expiration date, or they may be extended with the approval of the Personnel Commission. Veterans' Preference Points: This recruitment is eligible for veterans' preference points for qualifying veterans upon initial hire.
Employment Requirements

Fingerprinting: State law requires that all employees be fingerprinted. AB 1610 prohibits employment until the Department of Justice completes its obligations regarding the arrest and conviction information. Medical and Physical Requirements: Verification of freedom from tuberculosis will be required. A medical examination may be required of eligible candidates.
