Michigan Medicine's GI Physiology and Manometry Laboratory is recognized by the American Neurogastroenterology and Motility Society as a leading center for clinical training in Gastrointestinal Motility and Neurogastroenterology. This laboratory is used as the standard for developing and expanding motility operations at external academic centers. The GI Physiology and Manometry Laboratory offers comprehensive diagnostic testing to evaluate the entire gastrointestinal tract.
The GI Physiology Technologist provides GI diagnostic testing for a diverse patient population (from neonates to geriatrics), across locations (laboratory to operating room), and patient statuses (outpatient to inpatient). This wide spectrum entails a diverse technical acumen to perform, acquire, and edit high-quality GI diagnostic testing. Additionally, the technologist position assists in clinical research and biomedical engineering projects. On-the-job training will be provided to help develop the skills necessary to be successful in this position.
Responsibilities include performing technical skill duties in all GI tests and procedures, ensuring that proper technical practices are employed according to accepted standards and procedures. The technologist also provides proper maintenance, assembly, handling, and techniques of specialty instrumentation. They meet with patients and parents to explain GI testing procedures, prepare equipment and supplies for various tests, test and calibrate all equipment to be used during the GI procedures to ensure accurate functioning, conduct and/or participate in formal in-service programs regarding the care of the GI patient, educate patients and their families on various testing and treatment methods, collect, document, and report specific data to appropriate medical providers, fill out appropriate paperwork to ensure accurate hospital and physician billing, track and order disposable and reusable inventory necessary for the day-to-day operations of the GI Physiology and Manometry Laboratory, and perform job functions adhering to service principles with a customer service focus of innovation, service excellence, and teamwork to provide the highest quality care and service to our patients, families, co-workers, and others.
Additional responsibilities include on-call coverage and additional duties as assigned.
What You Will Do includes performing GI Physiology Laboratory diagnostic tests independently involving bacterial presence and carbohydrate fermentation and pressure/video capsule imaging within a laboratory setting in non-sedated adult and pediatric patients, performing anorectal and esophageal manometric and pH testing independently within a laboratory setting in non-sedated adult and pediatric patients, performing GI Physiology Laboratory and Manometry/pH testing independently within an inpatient adult and pediatric population, performing GI Physiology Laboratory and Manometry/pH testing independently within procedure and operating room settings in adult and pediatric patients, performing competency in performing GI Physiology Laboratory bench and manometry testing, performing Hydrogen Breath Testing (HBT), performing Urea Breath Testing, performing Colonic Transit Testing, performing Video Capsule Endoscopy, performing Patency Capsule, performing Colon Video Capsule Endoscopy, performing Electrogastrogram, performing Anorectal Manometry and Balloon Expulsion Testing, performing Esophageal Manometry, and performing Impedance 24 pH Testing.
Required qualifications include a bachelors degree in Biological/Health Sciences or related field and one year of patient care experience.
Desired qualifications include previous experience working in a medical charting system, clinical laboratory experience, intubation experience, proficiency with venipuncture, including starting IVs, coursework or experience with statistics, ability to move equipment, approximately 20 pounds, and patients, strong communication skills, including written and verbal communication, ability to work with computer systems, demonstrated strong attention to detail skills, and ability to work with a diverse patient and clinical population.

Primary work location is a float position for both the Brighton Center for Specialty Care (BCSC) in Brighton and the University Hospital in Ann Arbor. Hours: 7:00 am to 5:30 pm Monday through Friday.
