Instrumentation & Controls Technician
ACS is looking for an Instrumentation & Controls Technician to join our team.
The Instrumentation & Controls Technician will work alongside a team of controls engineers and technicians to support the instrumentation and controls needs for a variety of process and industrial projects. This is a hands-on, field-focused role, with significant time spent at customer sites supporting equipment installation, startup, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting. When not traveling, this position will support project work at our Verona headquarters and manufacturing facility. This position requires approximately 50-75% travel to customer sites, including extended stays based on project needs.
Job responsibilities:
- Travel to customer sites to support instrumentation and controls activities including equipment installation, startup, testing, commissioning, and troubleshooting.
- Perform I/O checkout, troubleshooting, and instrument calibration.
- Work with engineers, electricians, contractors, and customer personnel to support equipment installation and resolve field issues.
- When not working at customer sites, support control panel assembly, wiring, system testing, and other project activities at our manufacturing facility.
- Work alongside engineers to interpret design specifications, control drawings, and customer requirements.
- Develop and/or review wiring schematics and control panel layout drawings.
- Program and integrate Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLCs), including Allen Bradley, Siemens, GE, Wago, and similar platforms.
- Perform system functionality testing on equipment at our manufacturing facility and customer sites.
- Support installation and field contractor activities at customer sites.
- Perform onsite equipment startup, commissioning, and validation.
- Assist with tuning PID loops and validating programming to ensure systems operate according to control sequences.
- Develop field sketches and diagrams to communicate system installation requirements.
- Assist with customer training and development of control system documentation.
- Work on multiple projects while effectively managing changing priorities, schedules, and deadlines.
Basic requirements include:
- Associate's degree in Industrial Technology, Electrical Technology, Automation, Controls, or a related field preferred.
- 1–2 years of field experience with the commissioning and startup of PLC-based control systems.
- Experience with instrumentation, calibration, checkout, and troubleshooting.
- Ability to understand and interpret P&IDs, electrical schematics, and control drawings.
- PLC and HMI programming or integration experience.
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Strong organizational, time management, and communication skills.
- Ability to work effectively as part of a project team and interact professionally with customers, contractors, vendors, and coworkers.
- Ability to travel 50-75% to customer sites, including overnight stays of up to two weeks at a time, to support project installation, startup, testing, commissioning and troubleshooting activities.
