Summary

The Product Engineer role is a critical inside-facing position designed to serve as the connective tissue between customers, sales, and engineering teams. This versatile role combines technical engineering expertise with customer service and sales support responsibilities. The Product Engineer will take inbound customer calls to understand application needs, collaborate with engineers to design and quote wire and cable assemblies, produce detailed customer quotations and manufacturing drawings, and handle day-to-day customer service and order follow-up.

This position requires someone who can bridge the gap between customer requirements and manufacturing capabilities while supporting outside sales from the inside. The role demands a "cradle to grave" ownership mindset, managing customer relationships from initial inquiry through final delivery. This is an excellent opportunity for a technically minded professional with strong interpersonal skills to make a tangible impact on customer satisfaction and business growth.

Responsibilities

  • Inbound Customer Call Management – Serve as the primary point of contact for inbound customer inquiries, actively listening to understand application needs, technical requirements, and project specifications while building rapport and trust with demanding customers.
  • Technical Solution Design and Quotation – Work collaboratively with the engineering team to design custom wire and cable assemblies, translate customer requirements into manufacturable solutions, and produce accurate, detailed quotations that balance technical specifications with cost considerations.
  • Manufacturing Drawing Creation – Develop comprehensive manufacturing drawings and technical documentation that clearly communicate product specifications, assembly instructions, and quality requirements to production teams, ensuring accuracy and manufacturability.
  • Customer Service and Order Follow-Up – Handle day-to-day customer service activities including order status updates, delivery coordination, issue resolution, and proactive communication to ensure customer satisfaction throughout the entire order lifecycle.
  • Inside Sales Support – Provide critical inside support to outside sales representatives by managing customer relationships, processing orders, handling technical inquiries, and serving as the internal liaison to keep sales initiatives moving forward efficiently.
  • Wire and Cable Technical Specification – Apply knowledge of wire and cable industry standards including UL specifications, wire gauges, voltage ratings, and harness/connector assembly requirements to ensure all solutions meet regulatory and performance standards.
  • CRM and Documentation Management – Maintain accurate customer records, quotations, and order information in CRM systems while utilizing Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Office suite to create professional presentations, reports, and tracking documents.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration – Work closely with sales, engineering, production, and leadership to ensure alignment on customer requirements, technical capabilities, manufacturing constraints, and delivery timelines throughout the product lifecycle.
  • Problem Solving and Customer Issue Resolution – Investigate and resolve technical issues, customer concerns, or order complications using systematic analysis, strong interpersonal skills, and collaborative problem-solving to maintain positive customer relationships.
  • Continuous Process Improvement – Identify opportunities to streamline quotation processes, improve customer communication workflows, enhance technical documentation, and implement best practices that increase efficiency and customer satisfaction.

Ideal Candidate

  • Wire and Cable Industry Knowledge – Possesses direct experience and knowledge of the wire and cable industry including UL standards, wire gauges, voltage specifications, harness/connector assembly, and industry terminology; candidates without this knowledge face a significant handicap, making this expertise highly valuable.
  • Engineering Background with Sales Interest – Holds an engineering degree or technical background with demonstrated interest in customer-facing roles.
  • Strong Interpersonal and Communication Skills – Demonstrates exceptional ability to build relationships, handle demanding customers with professionalism and patience, communicate technical concepts clearly, and serve as a trusted advisor to diverse stakeholders.
  • Technical Software Proficiency – Comfortable and proficient with CRM systems, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and the full Microsoft Office suite; able to create professional documents, analyze data, and maintain organized customer records.
  • "Cradle to Grave" Ownership Mindset – Takes full ownership of customer relationships from initial inquiry through final delivery and beyond; demonstrates accountability, follow-through, and commitment to ensuring complete customer satisfaction.
  • Electrical Knowledge and Fluency – Brings working knowledge of electrical principles including voltage, capacitance, and impedance, which enables effective communication about product properties, applications, and technical specifications with customers and engineers.

Education and Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering (Electrical, Mechanical, Materials, Industrial, or related discipline) preferred, OR equivalent combination of technical education and relevant industry experience
  • 3-7 years of professional experience in inside sales, applications engineering, customer service, product engineering, or related technical customer-facing roles
  • Wire and cable industry experience strongly preferred; knowledge of UL standards, wire gauges, voltage specifications, and harness/connector assembly is highly valuable and significantly differentiates candidates
  • Demonstrated experience in customer-facing technical roles that require translating customer needs into product specifications or solutions
  • Strong interpersonal and communication skills with proven ability to handle demanding customers and build long-term relationships
  • Proficiency with CRM systems, Microsoft Excel, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Office suite required
  • Experience creating quotations, technical drawings, or manufacturing documentation
  • Working knowledge of electrical principles including voltage, capacitance, and impedance preferred
  • Background in electronics, contract manufacturing, cable assembly, or related industries is advantageous
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with engineering, sales, and production teams
  • Strong attention to detail with ability to manage multiple priorities and maintain accuracy under pressure
  • Willingness to take ownership of customer relationships from initial inquiry through final delivery
  • Valid driver's license and ability to work on-site in Central Massachusetts location
