At Houston Methodist, the Patient Care Assistant (PCA) is responsible for functionally progressing from novice to competent, demonstrating basic knowledge and skills to communicate appropriately and perform delegated nursing‑assistant level tasks for an age‑specific, diverse patient population. The PCA conducts hourly rounding to ensure patient needs are met, records data per policy and procedure, and reports observations and patient problems to the licensed nurse. The PCA performs basic patient care activities of daily living (ADL) within unit‑specific limits and practices Patient and Family Centered Care in concert with Houston Methodist ICARE values. FLSA Status Non-exempt Qualifications Education High School diploma or equivalent education (examples include: GED, verification of homeschool equivalency, partial or full completion of post‑secondary education, etc.) Experience Must complete one of the following: PCA externship PCA internal internship Six months of direct patient care experience Enrolled in a school of nursing program with a completed first clinical rotation Licenses and Certifications BLS – Basic Life Support or Instructor (AHA) – American Heart Association Skills and Abilities Demonstrates the skills and competencies necessary to safely perform the assigned job. Proficient in speaking, reading, and writing English as required for patient or employee safety. Can communicate with patients, physicians, family and co‑workers in a customer‑service manner. Performs basic ADL patient care within defined limits. People Essential Functions Promotes a positive work environment with the interprofessional care team. Responds positively to requests for assistance and works well with others to achieve team goals. Interacts respectfully with peers, staff, and physicians, promoting open communication. Reports pertinent patient information clearly and timely to the interprofessional team. Contributes towards improvement of department employee engagement scores. Service Essential Functions Follow patient and family‑centered care standards and provide direct patient care under RN direction. Document care, treatments, and assessments per policy and consult nursing personnel as needed. Assist with equipment, supplies, and act as in‑house courier as required. Organize workflow, solve basic problems, manage priorities with guidance from nurse or management. Contribute to improving patient satisfaction scores through bedside handoff/report. Quality/Safety Essential Functions Report observations, conditions, and problems to licensed personnel. Maintain patient privacy and safety. Provide hand‑off at shift change to promote patient‑centered care. Conduct hourly rounding to meet patient needs and report near misses. Support initiatives to prevent pressure injuries, patient falls, and hospital‑acquired infections. Finance Essential Functions Assist with patient and staffing needs across the service line or hospital. Utilize resources efficiently and manage time to minimize overtime. Growth/Innovation Essential Functions Provide innovative solutions for performance improvement projects. Identify self‑development needs and seek guidance. Update personal development plan regularly.
