The Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant role supports a multidisciplinary environment within Genitourinary Medical Oncology, where collaboration across physicians, nursing, and allied health professionals is essential to delivering high-quality cancer care.

The Advanced Practice Nurse or Physician Assistant position at UT MD Anderson functions in an expanded clinical capacity, providing assessment and therapeutic management for oncology patients and their families. The Advanced Practice Nurse contributes to the mission of UT MD Anderson by delivering care to individuals undergoing cancer treatments such as surgery, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, and biotherapy while addressing related symptoms and comorbidities. The Advanced Practice Nurse plays a vital role in coordinating care within specialized cancer populations and service-specific units.

The ideal candidate will possess advanced clinical education, 1-2 relevant oncology-focused experience, and appropriate licensure in the State of Texas, demonstrating the ability to work autonomously while collaborating effectively with multidisciplinary teams to deliver high-quality patient care.

Responsibilities

Clinical Assessment & Patient Care

Conduct comprehensive health assessments including medical, family, and social histories and review of systems.

Perform physical examinations and psychosocial assessments for oncology patients.

Monitor laboratory, radiographic, and procedural data to inform care decisions.

Clinical Decision-Making & Symptom Management

Practice autonomously within the Nurse Practice Act to prevent and manage symptoms and treatment-related toxicities.

Evaluate patient responses to treatment and modify care plans in collaboration with the healthcare team.

Address health abnormalities related to cancer diagnosis and treatment.

Care Coordination & Collaboration

Coordinate medical care across interdisciplinary teams including physicians, nurses, and allied health professionals.

Collaborate on care planning, follow-up, and evaluation of treatment outcomes.

Function as a liaison between patients, families, and the care team.

Education & Consultation

Provide health education and counseling to patients, families, and healthcare professionals.

Promote health, disease prevention, and effective management of oncology conditions.

Serve as a clinical resource by offering consultation to colleagues and allied personnel.

Professional Development & Documentation

Participate in continuing education and professional development activities.

Review clinical literature to stay current with advancements in oncology nursing.

Contribute to professional organizations and disseminate knowledge through publications or presentations.

Document patient care in accordance with institutional policies and standards.

Perform other duties as assigned.

Education

Required: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse Master's Degree in Nursing or Doctor of Nursing Practice. May be waived for applicants who obtained recognition as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse from the Texas State Board of Nursing prior to 1/1/2003. Graduate education and related Texas Board of Nursing authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Physician Assistant Master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant (PA) program by the Accreditation Review Commission on Education for the Physician Assistant (ARC-PA), except for Physician Assistants who graduated from a PA program prior to 2013.

Experience

Preferred: At least 1 year of Oncology experience as an Advanced Practice Provider.

Licensure / Certification

Required: Advanced Practice Registered Nurse All of the following: Written authorization from the Texas Board of Nursing to function as an Advanced Practice Registered Nurse (APRN or ACNP or ACNPC or ACAGNP or AGACNP or ACNPC-AG or AGACNP or AGNP or ACPNP or ANP or AGNP or AGPCNP or FNP or GNP or PNP or PMHNP or WHNP or APNP). Related authorization must be consistent with clinical practice area and patient population. Basic Life Support (BLS). Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) If working in the following departments: Pediatric - Patient Care (113100). MAY BE REQUIRED: Authorization for limited prescriptive authority by the Texas Board of Nursing. Physician Assistant All of the following: PA certification by the National Commission of Certification of Physician Assistants. Licensed by the Texas State Board of Physician Assistant Examiners. MAY BE REQUIRED: Eligible to be granted limited prescriptive authority by the State of Texas. Must meet the American Heart Association Basic Life Support (BLS), ACLS (Advanced Cardiac Life Support) or PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support) if working in one of following department: Pediatrics - Patient Care (113100).
