Become a part of our caring communityWe are seeking an accomplished Director of AI Engineering to lead the strategy, architecture, and delivery of enterprise-scale agentic AI capabilities within Humana's AI platform. This leader will drive the development of foundational AI services, frameworks, and platforms that enable the organization to rapidly build, deploy, and scale next-generation AI solutions across diverse business domains. The ideal candidate combines deep technical expertise in AI/ML engineering with proven leadership experience in building high-performing engineering organizations. They will influence enterprise AI strategy, partner with senior technology leaders across architecture, security, data, and product teams, and establish the technical vision required to accelerate adoption of agentic AI while ensuring scalability, security, reliability, and business impact.Key ResponsibilitiesTeam Leadership: Lead and grow a team of AI engineers building foundational services, frameworks, and tools for agentic AI applications—enabling consistent, scalable, and cost-effective development across the organizationIndustry Expertise: Stay current with industry trends in generative AI (e.g., foundation models, evaluation techniques, retrieval-augmented generation, fine-tuning approaches, and open-source tooling) and help the team apply them effectivelyCross-Functional Collaboration: Drive cross-functional alignment with enterprise architecture, security, data engineering, DevOps, and application leads to ensure the generative AI platform is well-integrated and aligned with broader enterprise goalsMentorship: Mentor and coach AI engineers, helping them grow their technical skills and career paths while fostering a culture of experimentation, humility, and excellenceEngineering Practices: Ensure strong engineering practices including CI/CD, automated testing, observability, and incident response for all services owned by the teamStrategic Planning: Define and drive strategic plans, goals, and team performance based on company-wide agentic AI initiatives, balancing near-term needs with long-term platform investmentsSystem Design: Lead collaboration with application teams to understand their needs and design systems which solve complex challenges with reusable components on the agentic AI platform (e.g., LLM orchestration frameworks, experiment tracking, evaluation pipelines, model proxy/gateways, observability, etc.)Problem Solving: Work with broad guidelines and technical knowledge to solve highly complex problems with long-term impactsUse your skills to make an impact Required QualificationsAdvanced degree (Ph.D. or Master’s) in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field.10+ years of experience in AI/ML engineering, with at least 5 years in a leadership role.Technical Skills: Proficiency in machine learning frameworks (e.g., TensorFlow, PyTorch), Python, and cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, GCP).Proven track record of leading and growing high-performing engineering teams.Preferred QualificationsExcellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders.Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to think strategically and execute methodically.Additional informationThis is a Hybrid office position where employees primarily operate from the company office with occasional work from home to support focus work and work/life balance needs. The pay range may be higher or lower based on geographic location and individual pay will vary based on demonstrated job related skills, knowledge, experience, education, certifications, etc.$189,400 - $260,500 per yearThis job is eligible for a bonus incentive plan.
