Attorney Supervisor

Job Description And Duties Under the general direction of the Chief Counsel and/or Assistant Chief Counsel of the Division of Workers' Compensation, the Supervising Attorney acts as legal counsel on complex and sensitive matters relating to the Division. The Supervising Attorney assists the Chief Counsel and Assistant Chief Counsel in planning, organizing, directing, and coordinating the work of a legal staff; acts for the Attorney, Assistant Chief Counsel as needed; confers with management on matters of policy and procedure; Incumbents supervise a group of subordinate attorneys who perform a wide variety of legal work, with varying levels of complexity, and independently handle complex and sensitive legal cases. The Supervising Attorney independently performs work involving novel theories, emerging areas of law, legal specialization, and precedential significance. Incumbents may be assigned sensitive and difficult litigation and handle cases that may be appealed to the highest courts. Assignments typically consist of negotiations, legislative liaison, hearings, legal research, and opinion/brief drafting; rendering legal advice and opinions to departmental management; responding to challenging legal correspondence; developing strategy and tactics in complex disputes or litigation; and includes acting in a lead capacity over other attorneys and staff. Working Conditions This position is located at: 1515 Clay St, Oakland, CA 94612. This position requires in‑office attendance in Oakland four days per week. The duties of this position are performed indoors in an office equipped with standard or ergonomic office equipment, as appropriate. The position allows for telework and/or hybrid work in accordance with CalHR’s and the DIR’s telework policy and procedures. The position requires the ability for prolonged sitting and to work at a computer for extended periods of time and to move and transport office items in a safe manner.
