Principal Disability Management Services Analyst

Job Summary The Principal Disability Analyst provides temporary and permanent accommodation assistance to employees with occupational and non‑occupational injuries and illnesses in order to control costs of disability, reduce lost time, and balance the business needs of UCSF and the interests of disabled UC staff, faculty, residents, and postdoctoral scholars. This role serves as a management liaison; referral source for internal and external services; technical expert for the HR community, and as a direct service provider to campus and/or health system employees and multiple departments to facilitate the interactive process and reasonable accommodation. Consults on the worker’s compensation claims process in conjunction with the Third Party Administrator and the occupational medicine providers. Serves as a consultant to campus and health employees, Leave of Absence Specialists, Labor and Employee Relations representatives, Payroll Representatives, and other HR and UC members on state (CFRA, PDL, KinCare) and federal (FML) leave laws; disability benefits (workers’ compensation payroll, Lincoln Financial); and state and federal disability laws (FEHA, ADA, EEOC, PWFA). Department Summary Disability Management Services (DMS) is housed within UCSF Human Resources and serves both campus and health system employees, managers, and Human Resources professionals to facilitate the interactive process and reasonable accommodations, and to provide Tier 3 leave‑of‑absence support. DMS also manages the enterprise’s workers’ compensation program and the ergonomics program for the Health system. Key Responsibilities Provide confidential disability counseling to academic, staff and student employees on medical work restrictions, interactive process, reasonable accommodation, leave of absence, return‑to‑work, workers’ compensation, and medical separation. Review and interpret documentation of complex disabilities to determine eligibility for disability services, including housing, workplace accommodations, leave of absence, or building compliance issues. Analyze and resolve complex disability/employment situations, provide guidance to other disability management and HR colleagues, and serve as Tier 3 for leave of absence concerns. Ensure adherence to the interactive process and report on case management; handle annual reporting and RFIs. Discuss accommodation needs with leadership and Academic Senate for escalated case management or review. Thoroughly document the basis for complex accommodation decisions to support medical separation or reassignment. Oversee and guide the accommodation process for complex cases, providing expert advice and ensuring reasonable accommodations are implemented. Provide training to departments and campus community on disability management, workers’ compensation, and leave of absence. Required Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in a related area and/or equivalent experience or training. 5–7 years of related experience, including disability management and/or human resources in a large organization. Advanced knowledge of the legal framework involving ADA and accommodations for individuals with disabilities under state and federal laws. Advanced knowledge of procedures for assessing and determining disability accommodation issues, including the Disability Compliance Office procedures. Advanced knowledge of assessment, accommodation, and intervention techniques for employee specialties such as learning disorders, mobility disability, and visual impairment. Skill to communicate with leaders, legal, and other organizational entities regarding employee accommodations and work needs, both verbally and in writing. Effective interpersonal skills, customer‑service orientation, and active listening skills. Effective analytical and problem‑solving skills, and critical thinking ability. Expert ability to develop course materials on reasonable accommodation and leave of absence and deliver content effectively to diverse populations. Preferred Qualifications Advanced degree preferred. Knowledge of organization‑specific computer applications, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook). Understanding of supplemental disability benefits.
