Class Title: School Counselor Reports to: Building Administrator Summary of Assignment Under the general direction of the assigned Building Administrator, school counselors promote student success, provide preventive services, and respond to identified student needs by implementing a comprehensive school counseling program that addresses academic, career, and social‑emotional development for all students. Counselors implement a preventative, proactive program using the American School Counselor Association (ASCA) National Model: A Framework for School Counseling Programs (2005). Essential Functions School counselors focus their skills, time, and energy on direct and indirect services to students. Foundation Supports development and implementation of the district comprehensive school counseling program around academic, career, and social/emotional domains. Develops and maintains a written plan for effective delivery of the school counseling program. Communicates the goals of the comprehensive school counseling program to education stakeholders. Management Spends majority of time providing direct and indirect services through the core curriculum, individual planning, and preventive/responsive services; remaining time in program management, system support, and accountability. Uses data to develop comprehensive programs that meet student needs and to measure the results of the program. Delivery District School Counseling Core Curriculum Provides leadership and collaborates with other educators in school-wide integration of the core curriculum. Supports development and implementation of the district’s core curriculum, aligned to ASCA Student Standards. Incorporates life skills needed for success in the twenty‑first century. Demonstrates classroom management and instructional skills. Develops materials and instructional strategies to meet student needs and school goals. Supports development and training of the district core curriculum, including lesson plans and staff training. Uses a variety of technology in delivering the core curriculum. Understands multicultural and pluralistic trends in curriculum development. Individual Student Planning Facilitates individual student planning. Develops strategies for planning on appraisal, advisement, goal‑setting, decision‑making, social skills, transition or post‑secondary planning. Accurately interprets and utilizes student data. Collaborates with parents/guardians and educators to assist students with educational, career, and life planning. Uses career assessment techniques to help students understand abilities and interests. Helps students navigate the college admission process. Understands relationship of academic performance to work, family life, and community service. Preventive and Responsive Services Provides individual and group counseling to students with identified concerns. Consults and collaborates with parents/guardians, teachers, administrators, and community resources. Delivers preventive and responsive services such as harassment‑intimidation‑bullying, character traits, conflict management, and test‑taking strategies. Implements effective referral and follow‑up processes. Uses assessment procedures to structure counseling services. Responds appropriately to crises with intervention strategies. Provides counseling during times of transition, separation, stress, and change. Supports students in academic, career, and personal/social counseling within a continuum of care. System Support Refers students to appropriate professionals and follows through to meet needs. Provides information to school personnel about the counseling program. Assists teachers, parents, and stakeholders in interpreting data. Participates in professional development to improve knowledge and skills. Assists administration in scheduling students and developing the master schedule. Supports district and school during assessments. Interacts and supervises students in various settings to build relationships and observe behaviors. Adheres to laws, policies, procedures, and ethical standards of the profession. Accountability Conducts a yearly program audit to review implementation and effectiveness. Collects and analyzes data to guide program direction. Measures results and shares them with stakeholders. Monitors student performance, behavior, and attendance; facilitates interventions. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience Appropriate counseling certification. Training in PBIS, Safe & Civil Schools, RtI/MTSS, crisis intervention, suicide and sexual assault prevention, gangs, at‑risk students, or related areas. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Uses community resources for non‑school issues affecting student progress. Applies instructional skills and principles of learning. Communicates effectively with diverse students, parents, staff, and volunteers. Provides leadership for building activities and adapts to new situations. Initiates and maintains accurate student and office records. Facilitates educational development of students. Can lift 20 pounds and push/pull 40 pounds. Certification and Licenses Washington State ESA Certificate in Counseling. Fingerprinting and background check. Desired Qualifications Master’s degree in School Counseling. Recent counseling experience. Working Conditions Work is performed in a regular elementary or secondary school building. Some work occurs outside the regular school day to meet with students and families. Exposure to normal dust, fumes, and occasional loud noises. Ability to use arms, hands, and fingers; lift 20 pounds and push/pull 40 pounds; and sit for prolonged periods are required. Conditions of Employment Employment is conditional upon completion of a Washington State Patrol and FBI fingerprint background check per RCW 28A.400.303. Fees are the employee’s responsibility.
