About the RoleThe Principal FPGA Engineer is the senior technical authority for FPGA and hardware-accelerated trading platform technologies within Equities Trading Technology.
The role is responsible for the design, development and evolution of FPGA-based solutions supporting market connectivity, market data processing, protocol acceleration, latency-sensitive workflows and specialised trading infrastructure.
Acting as a trusted advisor to engineering, architecture and product teams, the Principal FPGA Engineer drives technical strategy, establishes engineering standards and ensures ASX maintains deep capability in deterministic, high-performance computing technologies critical to modern trading platforms.
This is a highly specialised engineering position requiring exceptional technical expertise, industry experience and the ability to influence technology direction across multiple initiatives.
About the TeamThe Equities Trading Technology team delivers trusted, resilient and high-performance platforms that support Australia's equities and options markets.
The team works across software engineering, market infrastructure, product development, quality engineering and operational support disciplines to provide secure, resilient and scalable market services.
The Principal FPGA Engineer provides specialist expertise across these domains where deterministic performance, hardware acceleration and latency optimisation are critical success factors.
Key Purpose To provide technical leadership and engineering expertise for FPGA-based and hardware-accelerated solutions that:
- Enhance performance of market-facing services.
- Improve deterministic system behaviour.
- Reduce latency across critical processing paths.
- Strengthen ASX's specialised engineering capabilities.
- Support future trading platform innovation.
- Ensure solutions remain secure, supportable and operationally resilient.
- Design and develop FPGA-based solutions supporting trading platform services.
- Define architectures for hardware-accelerated processing and market data handling.
- Lead design reviews and technical governance for FPGA initiatives.
- Establish reusable design patterns, frameworks and engineering standards.
- Drive continuous improvement of FPGA engineering practices.
Trading Platform Performance Engineering
- Analyse latency-sensitive workflows and identify opportunities for acceleration.
- Evaluate protocol processing, market data distribution and connectivity architectures.
- Optimise deterministic processing paths across hardware and software components.
- Conduct performance benchmarking and capacity analysis.
Strategic Technical Leadership
- Act as the subject matter expert for FPGA and hardware acceleration technologies.
- Provide technical advice to Product, Architecture, Operations and Engineering stakeholders.
- Influence technology roadmaps and strategic investment decisions.
- Assess emerging technologies and industry trends relevant to exchange technology.
Engineering Excellence
- Define engineering standards, design principles and quality expectations.
- Participate in solution architecture reviews and engineering assurance activities.
- Guide teams in applying rigorous engineering discipline to low-latency systems.
- Support production readiness, resilience and operational supportability practices.
Specialist Collaboration
- Partner with software engineering teams to integrate FPGA capabilities into broader platform architectures.
- Work with network, infrastructure and operations teams to optimise end-to-end performance.
- Collaborate with vendors and external partners where specialist expertise is required.
- Contribute to industry forums and technology communities where appropriate.
Accountabilities
- FPGA technical strategy and engineering standards.
- Quality and maintainability of hardware-accelerated solutions.
- Performance and latency outcomes of FPGA-enabled services.
- Specialist design reviews and technical assurance.
- Technical mentoring and knowledge transfer.
- Operational readiness and supportability of FPGA solutions.
- Alignment with ASX technology, security and operational resilience requirements.
- Degree in Engineering, Computer Science, Electronics or related discipline.
- 10+ years engineering experience in FPGA development or low-latency platform engineering.
- Extensive experience designing and deploying FPGA solutions in production environments.
- Proven experience leading complex technical initiatives and influencing architecture decisions.
- Strong understanding of high-performance computing and distributed systems.
Deep expertise in several of the following:
- FPGA design and implementation.
- Hardware description languages (VHDL, Verilog, SystemVerilog).
- High-speed networking technologies.
- Low-latency market infrastructure.
- Protocol processing and acceleration.
- Real-time and deterministic systems.
- Performance engineering and benchmarking.
- High-performance networking.
- Linux environments and systems programming.
- Hardware/software co-design.
- Experience within exchange, trading, market data or financial services environments.
- Direct experience with market connectivity technologies.
- Experience working with exchange matching engines or market infrastructure.
- Advanced engineering or postgraduate qualifications.
- Industry recognition in FPGA, networking or low-latency systems engineering.
Although not a people manager, the Principal FPGA Engineer:
- Leads through technical authority and expertise.
- Provides mentorship and specialist development for engineers.
- Establishes engineering standards and best practices.
- Influences strategic technology decisions.
- Acts as a recognised expert within ASX Technology.
You will:
- Establish ASX's FPGA capability as a strategic engineering competency.
- Deliver measurable improvements in performance and deterministic behaviour.
- Enable the evolution of market infrastructure through hardware acceleration.
- Improve engineering standards for specialised platform design.
- Mentor and uplift capability across broader engineering teams.
- Influence technology strategy through recognised specialist expertise.
