Job Description - Lifeguard Supervisor (Seasonal Limited-Term) (2600001R) Job Description Lifeguard Supervisor (Seasonal Limited-Term) - (2600001R) Description Hourly Rate of Pay: $17.71 Position Grade: 7G Department: Recreation Division Job Type: Limited-Term Examination Number: EX1557 Location: Multiple - St. Louis, MO The eligible list for this position will be used for filling seasonal Lifeguard Supervisor vacancies. Positions are limited-term, paid on an hourly basis, and they are not covered by the Employee Benefits Program. At the end of the season, the department can offer the opportunity to return to work the next season and career seasonal status. Incumbents in this position supervise Lifeguards at municipal swimming pools. Duties include training Lifeguards, supervising and participating in swimming classes, testing chlorine levels in pools and ensuring all reports and work records are completed accurately. Essential Functions and Responsibilities Assigns lifeguards to stations. Trains and drills lifeguards in rescue methods. Supervises the work of lifeguards. Supervises and participates in the teaching of swimming and lifesaving and the coaching of swimming teams; organizes and officiates at water contests and exhibitions. Promotes a program of water safety at a municipal swimming pool and oversees lifeguards in the enforcement of safety rules and regulations. Supervises lifeguards in maintaining pool sanitation; draining and filling swimming pools, testing chlorine levels. Ensures all reports and records are completed accurately by the lifeguards. Identifies and surmounts obstacles to solutions (e.g., ordinances, lack of information, etc.). Organizes regular accountability meetings to keep track of progress. Spot checks field personnel and performance to ensure quality of work and data. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Data Utilization: Requires the ability to compile, assemble, copy, record and/or transcribe data and information according to a prescribed scheme or plan. Requires the ability to assess swimming pool hazards and safety precautions. Human Interaction: Requires considerable knowledge of life saving and swimming instruction principles and practices. Requires the ability to administer CPR and first aid. Requires considerable skill in planning, assigning, and supervising the work of subordinate lifeguards. Equipment, Machinery, Tools and Materials Use: Requires the ability to use equipment and/or materials used in performing essential functions. Verbal Aptitude: Requires the ability to utilize a wide variety of reference and descriptive data and information such as regulations, facility rules, accident reports, incident reports, attendance records, registration lists and forms, and general operating manuals. Mathematical Aptitude: Requires the ability to perform and explain basic math including addition, subtraction percentages and ratios. Functional Reasoning: Requires considerable skill in preventing dangerous situations from arising. Requires the ability to carry out written and oral instructions. Involves routine work according to clearly prescribed standard practices, with some latitude for independent judgment. Situational Reasoning: Requires considerable skill in recognizing emergencies and taking necessary action. Requires the ability to exercise the judgment, decisiveness and creativity required in situations involving the evaluation of information against sensory, judgmental and/or subjective criteria, as opposed to criteria that are clearly measurable or verifiable. Environmental Factors: Tasks may risk exposure to adverse environmental conditions, such as temperature and noise extremes, potential violence, disease, pathogenic substances. Physical Requirements: Requires the ability to lift, push and pull up to one hundred fifty (150) pounds. Ability to perform lifesaving skills. Requires the ability to sit, stoop, kneel, climb and swim to demonstrate, coach or rescue. Sensory Requirements: Requires the ability to recognize and identify similarities or differences between characteristics of colors, shapes and sounds associated with monitoring children’s behavior and coaching/officiating recreational activities. Qualifications Applicants must have all of the following: Current Certification in Lifeguard Training and First Aid; CPR for the Professional Rescuer; Previous experience working as a Lifeguard. Applicants that do not have current certifications in the above must successfully complete the American Red Cross Lifeguard Training and First Aid and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. City Residence Preference Points City residents who pass an examination for a position in the classified service and do not receive any other preference will receive a five (5) point preference on a scale of 100 points on the exam. City residents must have resided in the City for at least one (1) year at the time of filing their application to be eligible for the preference points.
