Respiratory Care Practitioner

Responsibilities Perform therapeutic procedures including intermittent positive pressure breathing, chest physiotherapy, postural drainage, nebulizer therapy, incentive spirometry, breathing exercises, tracheal irrigation, and aspiration. Administer inhalant medications and set up CPAP, Bi‑PAP, and non‑invasive ventilation. Provide and monitor continuous oxygen and humidification therapy. Initiate, monitor, and provide respiratory care to patients on mechanical ventilation (adult and neonatal/pediatric). Perform equipment check‑out procedures, adjust ventilatory parameters, and coordinate ventilator with patient. Perform nebulization, airway irrigation, tracheal suction and cuff care as needed. Monitor oxygen concentration, ventilatory volumes, muscular strength, humidification, ventilating pressures, sputum collection, breath sounds, and changes in respiratory condition. Perform arterial blood gas analysis and interpret results. Implement physician orders and determine appropriate therapy methods. Respond to therapeutic hazards and life‑threatening situations. Document findings and maintain medical record accuracy. Obtain respiratory history and conduct patient assessment. Perform diagnostic procedures such as bedside pulmonary function screening, EKGs, oximetry, end‑tidal CO₂ measurements, and sputum induction. Initiate life‑saving measures in emergencies and assist intubation. Use and maintain cardio‑respiratory equipment. Assist with transport of patients between facilities. Serve as an in‑house resource and assist with training of new staff. Participate in off‑site health fairs and school career days. Perform esophageal studies if applicable. Qualifications Rhode Island Respiratory Care Practitioner license (RCP); CRT required; RRT preferred. Associate degree from a Cardio‑Respiratory Care Program. Current CPR certification. Certification in arterial blood gases, respiratory therapy protocols/consults at Newport Hospital.
