Music Teacher (Grades 1-8, High School)

Music Teacher, Emerson Waldorf School Responsible to: Grades Chair, High School Chair Hours/week: 40 Employment classification: Exempt (Salaried) Position Overview The Music Teacher leads age‑appropriate music education for grades 1‑8 and high school students, following the EWS curriculum guide and Waldorf pedagogy. Responsibilities include explicit instruction in vocal music, recorder, lyre, stringed instruments, and music literacy. The teacher collaborates with colleagues to align with Emerson Waldorf School’s program goals, mission, vision, and values. About Emerson Waldorf School A premier preK‑12 independent day school located on a 54‑acre wooded campus in Chapel Hill, NC, offering indoor‑outdoor multisensory education. Accredited by the Association of Waldorf Schools of North America and the Southern Association of Independent Schools, with memberships in the Waldorf Early Childhood Association of North America and the North Carolina Association of Independent Schools. Essential Job Duties Classroom Responsibilities Plan and implement subject curriculum for the year aligned with Waldorf pedagogy and EWS curriculum guidelines. Develop written block, weekly, and/or daily lesson outlines in accordance with the subject curriculum. Present daily subject lessons reflecting the principles of Waldorf methodology. Assign age‑appropriate work for skill practice and lesson solidification. Give timely feedback and allow opportunities for refinement and improvement. Complete interim and final progress reports. Maintain physical classroom space. Perform non‑teaching duties such as playground supervision, pick‑up/drop‑off supervision, and scheduled substitution duties. Oversee subject budget annually, including purchasing and maintaining equipment and materials. Manage classroom behavior and discipline. Collaborate with colleagues to support each child’s healthy development and well‑being. Assess evolving needs of each child, consult with the Educational Support Coordinator, and implement agreed‑upon support plans. Participate in student support plan meetings with the Student Support Team. Build a healthy working relationship with parents and provide parent‑teacher conferences twice a year. Facilitate professional, warm, and clear communication with parents and colleagues. Maintain regular written updates for families. Other Responsibilities Attend all required meetings (Subject Teacher, Section, Full Colleague, In‑service days, and workweek). Participate in committee work as needed. Represent the program to parents, other professionals, and the public. Work with a mentor or speaking partner regularly. Engage in professional development opportunities and reflective practice to continuously improve teaching skills and knowledge of child development. Support admissions with the enrollment process. Contribute to updating the school’s curriculum document and collaborate with faculty. Maintain CPR/First Aid Certification and mandated reporter training. Represent EWS professionally and comply with school policies and procedures. Qualifications Core Competencies Deep interest in child development through the lens of Rudolf Steiner’s work. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Patience, empathy, and ability to establish positive relationships with students, colleagues, and parents. Flexibility and adaptability to a dynamic educational environment. Self‑motivated, team player with a strong sense of personal responsibility. Education and Experience Ideal candidate is an experienced Waldorf Music teacher trained at an AWSNA‑affiliated institute, with solid classroom skills working with grade‑school students, ability to support diverse learning needs, deep understanding of Waldorf pedagogy, and lifelong commitment to anthroposophy and education. A college degree is required; post‑graduate studies preferred. Other Able to lift up to 25 lbs. Mobility required to ensure safety of children and navigate wooded areas and uneven dirt paths. Work outdoors in various weather conditions. Visual and hearing capabilities for consistent supervision of children. On‑site work only; no remote/hybrid option. Successful background checks required.
