Responsibilities Under general supervision, perform technical duties requiring specialized knowledge. Troubleshoot problems with hydrometeorological field equipment, including dataloggers, cell modems, and other communication devices, and complex instrumentation. Conduct sensor calibrations, design and support development of hydrometeorological stations and its components, assist in better standardizing field and lab practices. Deploy new equipment, including preparing electronics and communications. Communicate to the team regarding follow up needs, and arrange these as needed. Ship equipment back and forth between Scripps and field sites. Assist with data workflows, data analysis and communications with project partners and stakeholders. Provide timely and detailed written communication with field team leaders regarding project progress and obstacles. Participate in outreach events. Demonstrate ability to work effectively under pressure and to re-direct efforts to meet operational needs, balancing competing priorities; function effectively in a team environment. Qualifications Graduation from high school or a General Education diploma and three years of laboratory experience or two years of college including courses in the natural, physical or social sciences and two years of laboratory experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience using word processing and image editing software. Experience with various computer programs including Microsoft Office. Skills with routine laboratory/office needs (library research, quote requests, organization, etc.). Experience with hydrometeorological equipment including surface meteorology sensors and related devices. Knowledge of and experience in general field research protocols. Excellent written and oral communication skills. Knowledge of field research safety requirements and procedures, and ability to maintain up-to-date safety training certification. Strong attention to detail and meticulousness in work. Excellent organizational skills with ability to keep clear records, manage varied workloads, and follow protocols. Ability to prioritize tasks and work independently; demonstrated problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Ability to interact effectively with diverse personalities with tact and diplomacy. Demonstrated reliability, punctuality and ability to follow through on tasks and meetings. Preferred Qualifications Bachelor's degree including courses in physical science or related field. SPECIAL CONDITIONS The job offer is contingent upon satisfactory clearance based on background check results. Occasional evenings and weekends may be required. Overtime may be required. Travel to field sites for a total of 2-3 months per year may be required. Must be able to perform heavy physical labor and work under adverse conditions. Must be able to use ladders, climb stairs, and lift over 60 pounds. Must be willing to work with hazardous materials. The FTE can be adjusted between 50% and 100% depending on the season and program needs. Start at 50% FTE but could increase during peak storm season for research data collection or program needs. Proven ability to multitask and work independently while effectively organizing and prioritizing a high volume of responsibilities to meet deadlines. Skilled at quickly adapting to changing priorities while exercising sound judgment and taking initiative. Pay Transparency Act Annual Full Pay Range: $53,035 - $63,099 (will be prorated if the appointment percentage is less than 100%) Hourly Equivalent: $25.40 - $30.22 The Hiring Pay Scale referenced in the job posting is the budgeted salary or hourly range that the University reasonably expects to pay for this position. The Annual Full Pay Range may be broader than what the University anticipates to pay for this position, based on internal equity, budget, and collective bargaining agreements (when applicable).
