DOD Skillbridge Internship - Patrol to Power Locations: THOMPSONS, TX 77481; JEWETT, TX 75846; ELDON, TX 77520; Deer Park, TX 77536-2436; Houston, TX 77064. Responsibilities Operate, inspect, and monitor steam power plant equipment (boiler/furnace, turbine/generator, fuel systems, auxiliary systems, valves, pumps, blowers, environmental control, water treatment). Recognize safety hazards and follow safety guidelines for personal protection, protect fellow workers and the public. Observe variations in operating conditions and interpret meter and gauge readings to troubleshoot plant equipment and resolve operational problems. Monitor and record data through instruments, recording charts, annunciator systems and other monitoring devices onto shift logs as directed by plant operational procedures. Perform routine cleaning of work area. Arrange own transportation to work location and may be reassigned to another location at the Company’s discretion. Working Conditions Work both inside and outside in all temperatures and climate conditions in accordance with Heat Stress procedures. Work around large rotating equipment, energized electrical equipment in high noise areas, confined places, elevations over 250 ft, or platforms at heights of 5 ft or greater. Climb stairways, ladders, and work from aerial devices. Must be prepared to work irregular or rotating shifts and respond to emergency callout 7 days a week, 24 hours a day. Must work in mentally stressful environments and react to crises requiring immediate action to prevent damage or hazard. Daily work requires walking, standing, sitting, kneeling, crouching, squatting, twisting, pushing, pulling, shoveling, climbing and operating hand tools up to 25 lbs in various positions. Lift, carry, position and use tools or equipment weighing up to 50 lbs in awkward positions, swing sledge hammers, stoop and bend to reach valves, pull chain-falls or come-a-longs. Twist body and neck while driving company vehicles or operating company equipment. Perform duties may cause frequent jarring of the body. Work with hazardous and non-hazardous materials (refer to waste management guidance manual). Wear personal protective equipment as required (steel‑toed boots, respirators, goggles, safety glasses, etc.). Discern assorted colors. Qualifications Possess or obtain within 60 days an Associate’s Degree in Process Technology or related field, OR 2 years of power plant operations experience or relevant military experience. Ability to operate various switches and valves and understand their effect on the generating station. Operate without supervision and handle multiple tasks simultaneously. Communicate plant system and equipment conditions to others. Discern and respond to verbal and auditory signals from control panel. Record and analyze data with instruments, charts, annunciator systems, and shift logs. Tag out/lock out equipment per NRG’s procedure. Perform periodic maintenance checks on equipment. Operate company vehicles and equipment (e.g., forklift, plant vehicle) and maintain operating licenses. TDL is required. Use a personal computer and associated software. Perform flow, pressure and meter calculations using addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. Read and interpret blueprints, schematic diagrams, procedures and technical manuals. Generate work notifications for equipment repair. Communicate information clearly, orally and in writing. Operate computer systems for data input, analysis and comprehension. Perform routine laboratory tests and boiling water analysis and prepare demineralizer samples. Work successfully in a team environment. Assist others in performance testing. Salary and Benefits Salary offered will be commensurate with the successful candidate’s education and/or experience and in accordance with the Collective Bargaining Agreement covering this position.
