Recreation Specialist

The Recreation Specialist is responsible for planning, organizing, and facilitating recreational activities for teenagers in a group home setting. This role supports the social, emotional, and physical development of residents by providing structured, engaging, and therapeutic recreational programs. The Recreation Specialist works closely with staff to create a safe, positive, and inclusive environment where teens can build confidence, develop life skills, and foster healthy relationships.

Responsibilities:

Develop and lead recreational activities such as sports, arts and crafts, music, outdoor adventures, and team-building exercises.

Design programs that promote emotional well-being, self-expression, and positive peer interactions.

Adapt activities to accommodate diverse interests, backgrounds, and abilities.

Organize special events, field trips, and community service projects.

Encourage and motivate teen residents to participate in recreational programs.

Serve as a mentor and positive role model, fostering a supportive and inclusive atmosphere.

Utilize activities as a tool for teaching problem-solving, communication, and teamwork.

Provide one-on-one support to residents who need individualized engagement.

Work closely with social workers, counselors, and direct care staff to align recreational activities with residents' therapeutic and developmental goals.

Communicate with residents' case managers, family members, and other stakeholders as needed.

Maintain documentation of participation, behavioral observations, and program effectiveness.

Ensure all recreation areas, equipment, and supplies are safe, clean, and well-maintained.

Manage program resources and assist with budgeting for recreational supplies.

May require evening, weekend, and holiday shifts.

Physical activity including standing, lifting, and assisting residents.

Potential exposure to challenging behaviors; must be comfortable de-escalating situations and providing positive reinforcement.

Perform all duties within contract, state and federal regulations, company policy, and regulatory agency standards.

May be required to drive vehicles, be insurable with our auto insurance provider, and complete company vehicle training.

Qualifications:

Bachelor's degree in Recreation Therapy, Psychology, Social Work, Youth Development, or a related field required. NCTRC (National Council for Therapeutic Recreational Certification) Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist (CTRS) preferred. Experience working with at-risk youth, adolescents in foster care, or teens with behavioral and emotional challenges. Strong understanding of trauma-informed care and youth engagement strategies. Ability to handle crisis situations with patience, empathy, and professionalism. Excellent communication and leadership skills. CPR and PCM (Professional Crisis Management) required. First Aid certification (preferred).
