Chiller Mechanic

Malace|HR is seeking an experienced Chiller Mechanic to maintain, troubleshoot, and repair large commercial chiller systems supporting a college campus. This role is critical to ensuring reliable heating and cooling for academic buildings, residence halls, laboratories, and other campus facilities. The ideal candidate has hands-on experience with large tonnage chillers and thrives in a mission-critical environment.

Key Responsibilities:

• Perform maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of large commercial chillers (air-cooled and water-cooled)

• Work on centrifugal, screw, and/or reciprocating chillers from manufacturers such as Trane, York, Carrier, or Daikin

• Monitor, inspect, and adjust chiller plant operations to ensure optimal performance and energy efficiency

• Diagnose mechanical, electrical, and control system issues

• Perform refrigerant handling, leak detection, and system charging in compliance with EPA regulations

• Maintain and service associated equipment including pumps, cooling towers, heat exchangers, and valves

• Read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and control diagrams

• Complete preventive maintenance tasks and maintain accurate service documentation

• Respond to emergency calls and participate in an on-call rotation as needed

• Ensure all work is performed in accordance with safety standards, campus policies, and regulatory requirements

• Coordinate with campus facilities staff, vendors, and contractors as needed

Qualifications:

• High school diploma or GED required; technical or trade school preferred

• Minimum 5+ years of experience working on large commercial or industrial chiller systems

• Strong knowledge of HVAC mechanical systems, electrical components, and controls

• EPA Universal Refrigerant Certification required

• Ability to troubleshoot complex systems independently

• Familiarity with building automation systems (BAS) 

• Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background checks required for campus access
