Job Summary The Engineer – Automation Engineering will work as a member of the Automation Engineering Department at Eli Lilly, Foundry. The engineer will provide automation support for one or more operating areas across site and/or for capital projects, ensuring reliable and compliant control applications and systems are used in the manufacturing environment. The role supports the startup of the new Lilly Medicines Foundry (expected 2025‑2028) and focuses on building operational excellence and a culture that supports GMP operations. Key Objectives / Deliverables Technical leadership of automation initiatives Mentor the process control team in design, controls philosophy, implementation, and commissioning Execute process control work implementation and coordination Develop and implement the Automation Engineering Project Plan Operational Excellence Technically lead and oversee Site Area leads and System Integrator work, including Functional Requirements, Design Specifications, DCS Application Software, and Test Specifications Lead and participate in design reviews and DeltaV application, laboratory, and analytical equipment application reviews; attend equipment and software FATs Lead a team of automation engineers supporting commissioning Provide periodic status updates to Project Management Develop functional requirements and process control strategies for control systems in collaboration with Process Engineering Design, code, configure, and test DCS software (sequence logic, graphics, batch software, etc.) Design, tune, and troubleshoot automation control loops Implement and support electronic systems such as plant historians used to capture process automation production data Maintain the validated state of the site control systems in line with Lilly quality standards, including validation strategies and documentation Support automation for capital projects, including new product introductions Promote the use of automation to improve productivity, operational efficiency, and compliance Develop a network of corporate contacts and leverage corporate expertise when needed Organizational Capability Coordinate with automation and compliance consultants to set and reinforce standards for rigorous automation work products Demonstrate initiative, strong planning, organization, and prioritization skills, and commitment to task completion and timelines Show keen technical curiosity, strong problem‑solving skills, and a desire for continuous improvement Influence peers and business partners effectively Communicate clearly and concisely with both technical and non‑technical audiences Knowledge of GMP, regulatory requirements, and computer system validation Basic Requirements Minimum B.S. in Engineering and experience in Automation Engineering, preferably in major pharmaceutical manufacturing involving laboratory and analytical systems and equipment, and systems integration; 2+ years of biopharma engineering, operations, or manufacturing experience Experience commissioning, qualifying, and supporting analytical equipment such as cell counters, environmental testing, and filter testing Qualified applicants must be authorized to work in the United States on a full‑time basis; Lilly does not sponsor work authorization or visas Additional Preferences Experience in design, development, commissioning, and qualification of highly automated greenfield manufacturing sites using SCADA, DCS, MES, LIMS, and site historian systems (DeltaV, Rockwell, Syncade, LabVantage, OSI PI) Experience facilitating and driving decision‑making at an organizational level Other Information Current location: Parkwood West – Indianapolis, IN Permanent location: Lilly Medicines Foundry – Lebanon, IN Accommodation Statement Lilly is dedicated to helping individuals with disabilities to actively engage in the workforce. Compensation & Benefits The anticipated wage range for this position is $64,500 – $143,000 per year. Full‑time employees are eligible for a company bonus (depending on company and individual performance) and a comprehensive benefit program that includes a 401(k), pension, vacation, medical, dental, vision, prescription drug, flexible spending accounts, life insurance, leave of absence, and wellness programs.
