Position Title Executive Director, Markkula Center for Applied Ethics Position Type Regular Hiring Range $280,000 - $300,000 per year; compensation based on education, experience, skills relevant to the role, and internal equity. Pay Frequency Annual Position Purpose Santa Clara University seeks an innovative, charismatic, and entrepreneurial leader for the Markkula Center for Applied Ethics. The Center focuses on ethics in biotechnology, health, business, government, politics, leadership, religion, media, and technology, with influence beyond campus to Silicon Valley and the world. The Executive Director is the chief executive, responsible for vision, strategy, fundraising, reputation, and leadership, while also holding a faculty appointment and maintaining an active research program. Essential Duties and Responsibilities Advancing the mission of the Center and sustaining progress in service of that mission; promoting the Center’s role on campus, in Silicon Valley, and worldwide. Continuously reviewing and enhancing long‑and short‑term strategies to achieve the Center’s vision. Leading a team of entrepreneurial program directors, supporting innovation in the Center’s focus areas. Defining the research and scholarship agendas for the Center while maintaining an active research agenda personally. Developing and growing relationships and networks with key intellectual, business, government, and philanthropic leaders in Silicon Valley and beyond. Engaging donors to fund the work of the Center. Representing the Center publicly and serving as a significant voice in public discourse on key ethics issues. Other Responsibilities Creating relationships and joint programs with all schools and colleges and other units throughout the University. Engaging closely with the Center’s Advisory Board of community leaders and Steering Committee of faculty advisors. Acting as a leader within the University, taking on tasks and assignments from the Provost and President at their request. Hiring, directing, inspiring, and motivating staff and affiliated faculty to achieve the Center’s mission and vision. Creating an annual budget for the Center and managing that budget. Key Skills and Capabilities Expertise in applied ethics; must be an expert in a field of applied ethics. Vision and strategy; ability to articulate a compelling vision in ways that inspire stakeholders. Leadership; ability to recruit, guide, and motivate highly talented staff, sustain an innovative culture, and communicate a compelling vision for the future. Fundraising; readiness to engage in development activities to provide short‑and long‑term resources to advance operations and goals. Communication skills; capacity to create thought leadership, participate in public dialogues, engage media, deliver presentations, and express ideas effectively in written and spoken form. Qualifications Knowledge Genuine appreciation for the goals and values of an academic institution. Understanding and support of the values and ideals of Jesuit education, especially Santa Clara University’s commitment to a humane, just, and sustainable world through teaching, scholarship, and service. Skills Demonstrated entrepreneurial, leadership, management, organizational development, and consensus building skills. Demonstrated oral, presentation, and written communication skills, with a premium on clarity and persuasiveness. Abilities Successful fundraising ability. Ability to develop and execute successful strategic and operational plans. Ability to shape and build a strong organization with multiple programs and a common purpose. Ability to motivate and interact effectively with a broad range of internal constituencies and external partners. Strong sense of purpose combined with flexible thinking, intellectual curiosity, and willingness to learn from others. Education Master’s/Advanced Degree required. Years of Experience Minimum of 15 years of experience. Significant experience in a senior leadership position in academia, industry, government, or the non-profit sector. Physical Demands Considerable time spent at a desk using a computer terminal. May be required to travel to other buildings on campus. May be required to attend fundraisers, conferences, and training sessions within Bay Area or elsewhere. May be required to occasionally travel to outside donors. Work Environment Typical office environment. Mostly indoor office environment with windows. Offices with equipment noise. Offices with frequent interruptions.
