HVAC Technician
The HVAC Technician is responsible for a wide variety of skilled tasks involved in the maintenance and repair of heating, ventilation, and air conditioning equipment throughout the facility. All tasks must be performed safely, in accordance with experience, training, instructions, and guidance from the maintenance supervisor or designee. This position performs duties with minimal supervision.
Responsibilities and Duties:
- Install, maintain, repair, and monitor building operation systems, including plumbing, heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) systems.
- Perform preventive maintenance and inspections on building HVAC equipment and systems. This is completed by following guidelines and as industry experience deems necessary (daily factory walkthroughs, filter changes, belt changes and tension checks, lubrication and oil changes, monitoring refrigerant lines, inspecting and cleaning refrigerant coils, electrical checks on motors, sensors, relays, fuses, etc.).
- Submit requisitions for parts/equipment as needed.
- Monitor and maintain computerized and mechanical building management systems in multiple buildings, production lines, and offices.
- Maintain work logs, charts, temperature logs, and preventive maintenance records.
- Assist in developing preventive maintenance programs for all equipment.
- Troubleshoot HVAC equipment or systems to locate or diagnose the cause of trouble and make necessary repairs. Includes assuming future malfunctions and repairing in a way to prevent future malfunctions. Repairs include: Electrical Component replacement, Motor replacements, brazing and soldering refrigerant, plumbing and steam systems, refrigerant recovery, calibrations, replacement and repair of duct systems.
- Follow all refrigerant and gas codes and other recognized policies/procedures, techniques, and safety precautions in the performance of duties.
- Safely operate various hand and power tools and powered industrial equipment such as forklifts, aerial lifts, and pallet jacks.
- Proficient in use of Building Management System to monitor HVAC system performance and compliance with space environmental specifications. Uses software to provide preliminary diagnoses of system operation problems to reduce labor for repair activities.
- Work and communicate with senior HVAC technicians, supervisors, leads, engineers, millwrights, and contractors to ensure HVAC equipment is installed or repaired per industry standards and in the best interest of the SubCom's Production Guidelines.
- Willingly work as a team player in an open-minded, respectful, and efficient manner.
- Follow safety guidelines (PPE, etc.) and demonstrate safe work practices. Ability to perform tasks in a safe manner, following plant safety rules, including Lockout/Tagout.
- Accepts increased responsibility and is accountable for his/her actions.
- Promotes job and process improvement as it relates to the department.
- Responds to multiple assignments in a timely and efficient manner.
- Overtime may be required, based on business need; regular attendance required.
- Other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalency required.
- Completion of HVAC technical training certificate program.
- 3-4+ years of journeyman experience in heating and air-conditioning, two of which were spent in commercial or industrial HVAC.
- Possession of an EPA Section 608 CFC Refrigerant Universal certification required.
- Experience in nitrogen testing, refrigerant recovery, vacuum preparation and refrigerant charging, including EPA recordkeeping requirements.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision; self-directed with a high level of initiative and strong work ethic required.
- Ability to read and understand maintenance manuals, work instructions, and blueprints.
- Possess the ability to react to changes of responsibility throughout the day. Must have the flexibility to respond to multiple assignments.
- Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed written and oral instructions.
- Math skills to include addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals. Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.
- Must be willing to work on whatever shift is needed, including nights and weekends.
- Ability to speak, read, and write English fluently.
- Computer skills, including familiarity with Microsoft Office, are strongly preferred.
- Must be computer literate to facilitate information search and operation of the Building Management System to monitor HVAC system performance and diagnosis of system malfunctions.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is required to:
- Wear the proper personal protective equipment for each task, including, but not limited to, safety boots, safety glasses, hearing protection, gloves, Arc Flash Protective Equipment, dust mask, etc.
- Climb up and down from equipment; climb up and down a ladder and work at heights up to 40'. Maintain proper balance while working at elevated level.
- Regularly lift and/or move 40 pounds. Anything heavier than 40 pounds requires additional assistance.
- Ability to reach with hands and arms and use hands to handle objects, tools and controls.
- Ability to stand, walk, crawl, and climb stairs regularly. Must be able to use roof access hatches and ladders on a regular basis.
- Ability to bend, squat, stoop, kneel or crouch frequently.
- Ability to talk and/or hear frequently.
- Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
- Ability to work both indoors and outdoors regularly in all elements.

- While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. Proper Lockout/tagout procedures must be followed.
- Ability to work in the vicinity of live electrical components.
- Proper personal protective equipment will be worn, and pre-work guidelines of work to be performed will be presented and approved prior to initiation of work.
