In the course of a year, we provide more than 3,000 children, ages 6 weeks through Pre-K with high-quality literacy and STEAM-infused learning; give 58,000 youth and teens access to sports, aquatics, day and resident camps, teen leadership development programs, and employment opportunities; provide over 200,000 members with programs, services, and facilities to enjoy connection and maintain wellness regardless of age; and engage over 25,000 volunteers and donors from across Atlanta to share in the gift of supporting their communities.Nature and ScopeThis position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Lifeguard creates a safe and positive atmosphere that welcomes and respects all individuals while promoting and maintaining safe swimming conditions in the pool, deck and surrounding areas in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.ResponsibilitiesResponsibilities (including, but not limited to):Support the lifeguard in maintaining active surveillance of the pool area.Know and review all emergency procedures and responds to emergency situations immediately in accordance with YMCA policies, procedures, completes related reports as required.Know, understand, and consistently support safety rules, policies, and guidelines for the pool and aquatic area.Remain calm and objective when under pressure or when challenged by others.Maintain accurate records as required by the YMCA and/or the state health department code.Support equipment checks and ensures appropriate equipment is available as needed.Check the pool for hazardous conditions when arriving.Perform chemical testing when not guarding, as required, and takes appropriate action.QualificationsQualifications:Minimum age of 15Certifications: Basic life support or professional rescuer CPR/AED, first aid, and emergency oxygen administrationCurrent Lifeguard CertificationAdditional trainings as assigned within first week of workAbility to maintain certification-level physical and mental readinessMust demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA standardsWork Environment & Physical DemandsThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
