Postdoctoral Fellowships in Computational Biology

Cancer Genomics and Evolution Laboratory, Prof. Dr. Peter Van Loo, Department of Genetics We seek talented and motivated postdocs in computational biology to join the Cancer Genomics and Evolution Laboratory of Peter Van Loo at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center. The postholders will spearhead projects in large-scale cancer genomics and evolution. About the Laboratory The Cancer Genomics and Evolution laboratory focuses on large-scale pan‑cancer genomics to gain insight into the genes, mutational processes, and evolution of cancer. Our work is highly data‑driven, with a focus on large-scale data analysis to gain broad biological insight and on the development of computational methods to enable conceptually novel analyses. The research group is mostly computational with a small wet‑lab component. Since its inception, members of the Cancer Genomics and Evolution laboratory have co-authored 22 papers in Nature, Cell, or Science. Recent successes include studies of intra‑tumor heterogeneity across cancers (Dentro et al., Cell 2021), the evolutionary history of cancer (Gerstung et al., Nature 2020), biallelic mutations in cancer genomes (Demeulemeester et al., Nature Genetics 2022), combined DNA methylation and genomic alterations in lung cancer evolution (Gimeno‑Valiente et al., Nature Genetics 2025), benchmarking methods for subclonal reconstruction (Salcedo et al., Nature Biotechnology 2025), and the history of chromosomal instability in genome‑doubled tumors (Baker et al., Cancer Discovery 2024). Position Qualifications The ideal candidate will have a PhD in computational biology (bioinformatics, genomics, etc.) and research experience in the field of cancer genomics, although we welcome applications from candidates with diverse educational backgrounds, including computational biology, physics and (bio)statistics, biology, or medicine. Applicants must have a proven publication record. Prior experience with handling massively parallel sequencing data is considered an advantage. Responsibilities Postdocs will spearhead projects in cancer genomics and tumor evolution. They are expected to lead their own project, contribute to other projects on a collaborative basis (both within the lab and with external collaborators), and guide PhD students in their research. The ability to work in a team is essential.
