Position Information Position/Rank: Assistant Professor – Peripheral Nerve PhD Scientist (Tenure or Research track) Department: Neurosurgery Location: Salt Lake City, UT Track: Tenure or Research track (dependent on qualifications) Start Date: Open until filled The Department of Neurosurgery seeks a PhD Research Scientist to lead a laboratory focused on peripheral nerve research. The successful candidate will develop protocols, oversee experiments, prepare manuscripts, write grants, and manage laboratory personnel within an independent research environment in close collaboration with a clinician‑scientist. Research Focus Our research centers on non‑healing nerve injuries. We model failed peripheral nerve regeneration to characterize the cellular and molecular microenvironment of pathophysiologic nerve regeneration, aiming to identify novel therapeutic targets for clinical intervention and improve patient outcomes. Qualifications Doctorate in biology, neuroscience, immunology, bioengineering, or a related scientific discipline. Minimum four years of post‑doctoral research experience (or equivalency). Proficiency in laboratory research procedures such as flow cytometry, immunohistology, animal breeding (including transgenic maintenance), neurophysiology, and behavioral testing. Strong communication and human‑relations skills. Preferred experience: PhD in immunology or peripheral nerve disorders; experience with translational models and grant writing would be advantageous. Demonstrated ability to perform the essential functions of the job as outlined in this description. Responsibilities Co‑develop scientific research projects and act as lead scientist. Stay current on project‑related scientific literature. Develop new methods or assays to achieve scientific objectives. Identify and implement creative solutions to overcome experimental challenges. Organize, interpret data, and derive study conclusions. Manage and train research staff to achieve research goals. Collaborate with internal and external investigators on multiple projects ensuring scientific significance and feasibility. Summarize results in scientific abstracts and manuscripts. Provide clinical and scientific information for various initiatives. Contribute to teaching activities by preparing and presenting educational seminars. Assist with grant proposal preparation, including background research, significance, planning, and statistics. Attend national conferences and present research findings. Work Environment Office and laboratory setting, with continuous physical and mental engagement. Physical Requirements Sitting, hearing, listening, and talking almost continuously. Repetitive hand motion (typing), walking. Seldom bending or reaching overhead.
