Police Officer I/II

Overview The City of Wasilla Police Department is hiring to fill the positions of Police Officer I and Police Officer II. This is a non-exempt, full-time position with benefits. Police Officers are empowered to enforce laws, maintain peace and order, protect life and property, and prevent and detect crimes. Officers have the power to arrest and must undergo training in law enforcement. Successful applicants must be willing and able to work all shifts: day, evening, nights, including holidays, weekends, and overtime. Police Officer I Position is ideal for those new to the field or starting a career in law enforcement. The starting pay is $36.30 per hour or $75,504 annually. Requirements include high school diploma, GED, or equivalent, and the ability to type at a net speed of 35 words per minute. To obtain the Alaska Police Standards Council Basic Officer I Certificate within the first year, candidates must pass background checks, agility tests, medical exams, polygraph, psychological examinations, drug screen, and oral board procedures. Must be a United States citizen or naturalized citizen and pass APSIN background clearance. Must hold a valid driver’s license and be able to obtain a valid State of Alaska Driver's License by time of hire. Some assignments may require endorsements for motorcycle operation or specific commercial vehicle operations. Able to obtain an Alaska Police Standards Council Basic Police Officer I Certificate within the first year of employment. Must be United States citizen or naturalized citizen and pass APSIN background clearance. Must possess a valid driver's license and provide a current driving record when requested. In some assignments may require endorsement for motorcycle operation or commercial vehicle operations. Police Officer II Meets Alaska Police Standards Council requirements for Police Officers and experience as a state trooper or municipal police officer. Lateral transfers require a minimum of one year of certified law enforcement experience and off probationary status. If out-of-state certification is accepted, background review and an abbreviated lateral academy may be required. Meets Alaska Police Standards Council requirements for Police Officers. Meets the requirements for Police Officer I. Experience in law enforcement as a state trooper or municipal police officer. May require additional training or certifications for specific duties. Must possess a valid State of Alaska Driver’s License and be able to operate a motor vehicle; provide a driving record upon request. Must possess an Alaska Police Standards Council Basic Certificate or equivalent from another state. Experience and Lateral Transfer Wages 1:1 credit on the pay scale for previous certified law enforcement experience. Lateral transfer wages (Wasilla Police Department) are listed as: 1 year: $40.35/hour – $83,928.00 annually 2 years: $41.39/hour – $86,091.20 annually 3 years: $42.44/hour – $88,275.20 annually 4 years: $43.53/hour – $90,542.40 annually 5 years: $44.64/hour – $92,851.20 annually Up to 15 years: $55.94/hour – $116,355.20 Benefits 4% swing shift differential; 7% night shift differential 12–22 hours of paid leave per month depending on service time Take-home vehicles (30-mile limit) Employer-paid academy, uniform and equipment Education incentive (5% for Bachelor’s & 2.5% for Associate’s) $100 per pay period for Advanced Police Certificate from APSC 11 paid City holidays per year plus 2 floating holidays No monthly premium for health insurance On-site gym and wellness program $1,250 physical fitness incentive Ongoing training and development See Benefits tab for full details Additional Information You can find more information here.
