Security Team Specialist II - Night Shift

Job Title Security Team Specialist II – Night Shift (2600048B) Overview The Lemuel Shattuck Hospital (LSH) operated by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health (DPH) is seeking a Security Specialist II, Sergeant. The incumbent would assist the Security Chief in the supervision and maintenance of protection of buildings, grounds, equipment, patients, and personnel in a State Hospital, against possible loss or damage from theft, vandalism, or other causes. Security Specialist II’s provide emergency first aid; may provide emergency coverage in various classifications; exercise direct supervision over, assign work to and review the performance of campus police personnel. Shift Night shift 11:00 PM – 7:00 AM, 40 hours per week, days off are Friday and Saturday. Duties and Responsibilities Designated the rank of sergeant and is responsible to the Chief for the direct supervision of all lower grade officers on his/her shift including their efficiency, conduct, appearance, and performance of duty. Consistently inspects all personnel on their shift to ascertain that each officer is in their proper area and their conduct and appearance are consistent with department policy and regulations in effect. Supervises and assists the security team specialists in making rounds and security checks of buildings and grounds to provide protection and detection and prevention of fires. Watches for prowlers, escapees, or anything which might endanger life or result in loss or damage to property. Assist the Chief in supervising and assisting in maintaining automobile traffic control on hospital grounds, including parking, speeding, and other traffic conditions, and take necessary measures to prevent unauthorized use of hospital roads and parking facilities. Assist in the search of lost or escaped patients on the institution grounds and returns them to their assigned hospital areas. Assists in cases of emergency such as heavy snowstorms, floods, or hurricanes; provides first aid for patients and personnel and calls for professional assistance. Drives motor vehicles for the transportation of patients, personnel, visitors, and materials when required. Operates 2‑way radio transmitter and receiver, base station, public address system, and fire alarm system and keeps written records of the above. May appear in court as a witness on various charges such as those involving trespassing, vandalism, or motor vehicle violations on the grounds of the institution. Assumes command responsibility for department personnel at all emergencies and crime scenes during the absence of a superior officer for the purpose of effecting predetermined plans and coordinating department resources. Possess physical stamina and endurance. Preferred Qualifications Experience with the types and uses of agency forms. Understands the laws, rules, regulations, policies, procedures, guidelines, specifications, and standards governing assigned unit activities. Knowledge of the geographic composition of the assigned work area. Knows the types and uses of firefighting equipment such as hoses, nozzles, etc. Learned the methods and techniques of firefighting. Experience with proper telephone procedures for making and receiving agency calls. Trained in the rescue methods used in firefighting. Understand of the laws, rules and regulations governing arrest, search, and seizure. Skill in using firefighting apparatus such as extinguishers, etc. Understanding of the types and symptoms of mental and/or emotional disorders. Experience with the terminology used in security. Learned the types and applications of emergency medical procedures such as cardiopulmonary resuscitation. Knowledge of the types and uses of fire protection equipment such as fire alarms and sprinkler systems. Qualifications and Experience First consideration will be given to those applicants that apply within the first 14 days. Minimum Entrance Requirements: Applicants must have at least two (2) years of full‑time, or equivalent part‑time experience in work involving the protection and/or security of buildings, equipment or individuals, or an equivalent combination of the required experience and substitutions below. Applicants applying for positions within the Department of Youth Services, Department of Mental Health and Department of Public Health are required to obtain and maintain a valid certification in Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), Automated External Defibrillator (AED) and first aid. Additionally, applicants applying for positions within the Department of Youth Services are required to obtain and maintain a valid certification in crisis intervention and suicide prevention. An Associate’s degree with a major in a related field may be substituted for a maximum of one (1) year of the required experience. A Bachelor’s degree or higher, with a major in a related field may be substituted for the required experience. Incumbents may be required to have a current and valid motor vehicle driver’s license at a class level specific to assignment.
