MANAGING COUNSEL, RISK LITIGATION

Position Summary Manages Risk Litigation practice areas relating to the University’s self‑insured liability programs (Employment Practices Liability (EPL), General Liability (GL), and Professional Medical and Hospital Liability (PMHL)), supervising a team of in‑house litigators and providing direct client service. Provides counsel to senior management on legal implications of policy changes, works with campus representatives to ensure compliance with legal requirements, liaises with outside legal firms, oversees retention of legal counsel, manages settlement authority, represents the organization in litigation, stays abreast of legislation and case law developments, and manages the Fiat Lux captive insurance relationship for UC Legal. Responsibilities Client Service (50%): Understand and serve UC’s internal and external clients, determine whether a program advances the University’s goals, manage litigation, act as legal specialist, negotiate on behalf of The Regents, promote appropriate risk tolerance, prioritize objectives. Leadership, Accountability, and Governance (35%): Provide an environment of growth, coach and mentor staff, set and monitor performance goals, ensure compliance with policies, manage attorneys to achieve high quality work, support strategic planning, monitor workload, and ensure meaningful contributions. Resource Management & Financial Budget (15%): Develop strategic goals for resource stewardship, contribute to outside counsel cost reduction plan, manage outside counsel budget, ensure compliance with contracting and purchasing, delegate work efficiently, reduce unplanned absenteeism, and maintain record‑keeping of resource allocation. Required Qualifications Minimum of 10 years of relevant litigation experience. Experience in change‑oriented operational management and people leadership. High integrity and credibility to make and communicate difficult decisions. Ability to lead by influence and consensus. Judgment, tact, and diplomacy in partnering with senior teams. Outstanding interpersonal, verbal, presentation, and writing skills. Exceptional ability to draft accurate, complete, and persuasive legal documents. Ability to represent institutional concerns persuasively to internal and external parties. Demonstrated teamwork and confidentiality. Commitment to the highest ethical standards. Preferred Qualifications Previous management or supervisory experience and/or significant project management experience. Ability to identify and develop the talents in others. Understanding of ethical issues in a University setting. Experience with insurance coverage and captive insurance relationships. Advanced degree in a related field. Member in good standing of the California Bar. Travel Requirements Infrequent travel for litigation or client meetings, and possible travel related to Fiat Lux board meetings. Special Conditions The successful candidate must reside within California and work on‑site at UC’s Office of the President in Oakland, CA at least two days per week on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Remote arrangements may be considered under exceptional circumstances.
