Coatings Chemist: Lead Product Development & Formulations

Coatings Chemist – Phoenix, AZ. New Corporate Office & Lab Facility. Responsibilities Lead technical development of products new and improvements to current products. Communicate and interact with Product Manager, Sales and Marketing and customers to determine needed characteristics of desired products. Take the lead on projects and work with lab technicians on projects. Identify appropriate raw materials needed to achieve desired characteristics. Design and oversee studies to develop product formulations. Design and oversee verification evaluations for developed products. Develop manufacturing instructions and procedures at production plants. Assist in design and development of packaging materials and processes for products if needed. Work with Quality Assurance to develop quality control procedures for raw materials and finished products for production plants. Report on progress at periodic engineering and management meetings. Develop product specifications, test procedures, use instructions, and information for other literature as needed. Put forth new and innovative product types that could be offered by the company. Technical Support Duties Understand production capabilities and communicate on improvements and design. Understand application procedures. Work with Product Manager to provide answers to customer questions and recommendations on product specifications, properties, performance, use, applicability, etc. Develop and deliver presentations on products or processes within the company and to customers or trade organizations as needed. Have a good understanding of competitive product characteristics and performance. Participate in applicable trade and technical organizations. Production Process Duties Oversee raw materials and finished product quality results at production plants to determine if adjustments in formulations or processes are needed. Evaluate and recommend alternative raw material sources and types for use in production. Establish working relationships with plant production and quality personnel. Maintain up-to-date formulations and manufacturing instructions for assigned products at plants. Monitor LIMS for Quality Data and act based on statistics. Product & Process Improvement Duties Optimize formulations considering specification conformance and production quality results. Develop plans and procedures to improve manufacturing processes as appropriate. Evaluate new types of raw materials, formulations and production methods to improve product performance and/or reduce costs. Keep aware and report on new technologies, raw materials, processes, and industry changes that may influence company products. Qualifications BS degree in an appropriate scientific field. Minimum of 3 years related work experience in coating products. Minimum 3 years related experience in product development. Working knowledge of email, Word, Excel and PowerPoint programs. Working knowledge of MRP systems. Ability for up to approximately 25% travel when needed. Ability to lift 50 lbs. Must have a clean driving record.
